"University Div Pre-CollArts&Sc" & B.A. in Computer Science on my application?

I applied for IU a few months ago, and I assumed I was accepted under the major I applied for, which was Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. But today I looked, and the application status says “University Div Pre-CollArts&Sc”. What does this mean? Pre-College Arts & Science? Bachelor of Arts in CS? Am I actually in the School of Informatics & Computing, or is this essentially saying I’m in a pre-designed program and I have to work my way up to a BS? Can I switch majors? Thanks for all the assistance.

It appears you didn’t qualify for direct admission to the SOIC, so you will have to do the following (pulled from here, in case you’re curious: http://www.soic.indiana.edu/prospective/undergrad-admit/apply.shtml</a>)

To be admitted to the School of Informatics and Computing, you must:

-Complete 26 credit hours of course work that can count toward the B.S. in Computer Science or B.S. in Informatics with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 (a C average).
-Complete the English composition requirement (ENG W131 or equivalent) with a minimum grade of C.
-Meet with your UD advisor to formally declare your major as the B.S. in Computer Science or B.S. in Informatics.
-Students pursuing B.S. in Informatics must also complete INFO I101 Introduction to Informatics and the fundamental math skills requirement (MATH M118 or equivalent), both with a minimum grade of C.

When you meet these requirements, you will certify into the School of Informatics and Computing. Students are certified in January, May, and September. You will receive an official letter welcoming you to the school.

The above is correct, but a little additional information might help you understand. The vast majority of IU freshman are admitted as University Division students. Very, very few are admitted directly to the school (SOIC in your case) or college from which they will graduate with their selected major.

Yes, you probably declared a major when you applied, but you can change that at any time. Computer Science majors can earn a BS through the SOIC or a BA administered through the College of Arts and Sciences. It’s likely you selected BA on your application thus the reference to pre-COAS. You didn’t ask, but I would recommend the BS route.
