University of Alabama (OOS) or UT Knox (In-state) for business school?

Should I attend University of Alabama out of state or UT Knox in state for business school? I also have been an Alabama sports fan all of my life so I’m tied up.

I want to major in business management but minor in sports management. I have toured both schools and enjoyed Alabama more but worried I can’t afford the cost.

You have this posted in the graduate school section of this forum. Are you asking about undergrad or graduate school? Usually in grad school, you don’t have a minor.

If you post your stats, someone here can tell you if you qualify for the auto scholarships at Alabama…if undergrad is what you are asking about.

Don’t fall in love with any place you can’t afford. That is pretty much item number 2 on the list of “how to have a happy and satisfying life”.

Is UTK affordable, defined as requiring no more than the $27K in max total undergrad loans ($5.5K first year)?

As a junior I have a 4.0 unweighted gpa and a 4.4 weighted gpa. I took the act and got a 23 on it.

Undergrad

Have you tried the SAT? Some students do better on that test. If you get your standardized test scores higher, my guess is you will have better chances of getting scholarships at these colleges.

@tsbna44 is familiar with both schools. Perhaps he can give you some guidance.

What is your budget?

Bama’s direct billed costs are over $49K - tuition, room and board. You qualify for no merit. Perhaps there’s a TO scholarship but I don’t see it. Can you afford $50K a year x 4? You could make take a few thousand off, living off campus and cooking but let’s say $46K+ a year.

UTK is about $27K direct billed - but do you qualify for hope? Then it will be less.

So it’s likely $100K less over four years.

Why do you like Bama?

Business Management is a general major (vs. like a Supply Chain or Finance) - and likely doesn’t have great outcomes. Sports definitely doesn’t have great outcomes.

In the end, you have to go where you can afford.

A compromise might be Ms State - it’s about $41K direct billed, but if I’m reading the scholarship table right, you’d get $16K. So $25K-ish.

There may be other sub schools too we can find. In the end, you can’t go where you can’t afford - especially given your choice of major which will be difficult.

But why only these two?

Best of luck.

At this point wait until you have both admissions decisions and costs in hand. If AL is affordable then great – if not then Go Vols!

Agree that trying the SAT and expanding your application list may make sense.

Because if auto merit, the student will in theory know the cost.

Unless Bana has TO merit, which I don’t see, it’s $49k direct costs.

UTK is $27k direct billed but there is Hope which is $4500 the first two years and $5500 the last two if qualified. I don’t believe merit happens at UTK due to the ACT.

If we know the budget, we can find others.

OP I get you’re a Bama fan but $$ trump all if you don’t have them.

Good luck.

If youre only a junior, you have time to raise that ACT score or try the SAT. Alabama is pretty transparent on merit levels tied to your stats.

UTK is far from an assured admit with a 23 ACT (test required there.) I agree if OP is accepted they likely won’t receive any merit.

Oh, I assume OP got into both.

If not, you are correct - it’s guaranteed admission if you are top 10% and a 24, not a 23, including a 19 subscore on math and English.

OP - have you been accepted? If you can’t afford Bama, you need other possibilities that are less cost - so what’s your budget? I gave you Ms State. Another might be UTC, Tennessee Tech, Memphis, Murray State, MTSU, WKU, Murray State, etc.

Let us know your budget - and forget Bama.

It’s just not meant to be.

Good luck.

It looks like in post #6 that OP is a junior

Ahhhh good. The state does free ACT and they can take on their own too and get a 24 or depending on budget, get merit from Bama (starts at 25 but isn’t big til 30).

I had also taken the act sophomore year and got a 22 and my super score is a 25 does that guarantee admission?

According to their website - yes.

UT uses the superscoring method, meaning we take your highest section scores of each test taken to determine your new composite score for consideration. UT does not combine superscore section scores across the ACT and SAT.

What is your budget ? Are you open to other schools?

Bama does not btw.

My budget is around 15-20 thousand a year.

Are you a HS junior NOW?

Have you tried the SAT? It might be a better test for you.
