University of Cal - Davis Vs. American University HELP!

Hello,

I am trying to decide between UC Davis and American University (in DC). I was admitted as a “Viticulture and Enology” (FYI, thats wine science) major at UC Davis and as a Philosophy major at American University (despite the fact I applied undecided).

I was offered spring (Jan 2007) admission at American and normal fall admission at Davis. At American, however, I can do the Washington Semester program in the fall.

I am curious about how easy it would be to switch colleges/majors inside these universities. For instance, if I do not end up liking V&E could I switch to Political Science at Davis? I applied undecided at American, but they gave me Philosophy (which is ironic, because I do like philosophy, perhaps they got that info from something else I filled out) but I want to beable to transfer to the School of Public Affairs or School of International Service. Can I do that?

Anyway, argue where I should go and why.

THANK YOU!!!

I don’t know about American, but unless they have changed things since I was a student, its pretty easy to change majors at Davis as long as you are not trying to get into an impacted major. The UC’s don’t generally require you to declare a major until the end of your sophomore year, and changes are very common.

If you are a California resident, I think you should choose Davis – you will have many more opportunities along the way, and a larger, more diverse student body. Davis also offers a program where you can spend a quarter in Washington with an internship – see: http://washingtonprogram.ucdavis.edu/undergraduate.html

(Not as good as spending 4 years in Washington at American, of course, but a lot less expensive)

davis you can switch majors after first quarter. visit if you can, that would probably help the most.

Are you a California resident?

whoa, that’s the coolest major ever!! I would go to UC-D. like calmom pointed out, you can spend time in Washington, DC at pretty much any school.

it should be easy to switch into political science.

the UC’s all share the Center for American Politics and Public Policy (CAPPP) program where you can spend a quarter in DC.

Before you change, you should know that UC Davis is the foremost university in the entire WORLD to study wine making.

Yes, I am a California resident, but tuition (if that is why you asked) is a minor consideration.

How do the PoliSci programs at Davis and American compare (assuming I can switch into them and want to) ?

American has one of the best political science programs in the country…it’s also in DC–fulltime…I don’t know about UCD, but American is tough to beat in regards to poli sci.

Ive actually seen Davis ranked ahead of American for poli sci…plus Davis is the better school overall for a person who isnt sure of thier major since it has a wider base of study.

Come to UC Davis.

davis if you are in state. tough call if you are outta state. i believe davis has better academics, but i prefer the location of american. i however would still choose davis.
