I have been accepted to 7 universitys in both UK and USA, and now I have narrowed it down to UCI and UF. ( I got accepted to King’s College London but it’s a foundation program so I don’t think I will like that, but if anyone have an opinion about King’s College London, please leave a comment ) So I would like to know which one would be the best in term of academic, environment and social life. My major is chemical engineering
Are you American or British?
In-state at any of those two?
If you calculate (tuition, fees, room, board) - (scholarships, grants)
what’s your result for each?
Academics are about the same at both schools (very good). They can’t get much closer in the rankings, with UCI typical a few spots higher. The Chem E programs are very comparable.
It really comes down to (other than cost), the California lifestyle (it’s 5 miles from the beach!) vs. a great “college town”. In any rankings based on social life and qualify of life, UF ranks much higher. UCI has a slight reputation as a commuter school, UF is anything but…
Congratulations on getting accepted to such wonderful schools! You have a tough decision ahead of you. Consider yourself blessed that you’re in this predicament.
Even though UCI and UF are extremely similar in academic rigor, I’d pick UF over UCI. From what I know about the two schools, UCI seems to be more humanities focused while UF is more science oriented. USN even states that engineering majors are the most popular at UF. For the record, engineering does not appear as one of the most popular majors at UCI. Another website ranks UF’s ChemE program significantly higher than UCI’s (UF appears at rank 20 while UCI appears at rank 56.) Rankings should never be the be-all-end-all, but it’s always interesting to see how different programs rank.
UF would also give you more of the traditional college experience than UCI, as the latter is rather notorious for being a commuter college. No matter where you end up, however, you have a bright future ahead of you! Best wishes.
Firstly, thank you @minohi @Gator88NE @MYOS1634 for replying my question!! It does help me a lot! @MYOS1634 I’m neither British nor American, So
UF= less tuition
UCI= much higher tuition
I also got accepted into the school of pharmacy and school of veterinary in my home country << which my parents prefer ( cheaper and only need 6 yrs to become a pharmacist or veterinarian ) but somehow I wanna go study abroad though.
So if you wouldn’t mind making a lists of pros and cons for me please?
Since UF is cheaper, go with UF.
pros: become bilingual, discover another culture, become well-rounded, full experience makes you grow faster and “better”, create networks of friends, more opportunities/resources (US universities tend to be better-funded and offer more opportunities than their counterparts abroad, although obviously it’s not always the case).
cons: save money and go to your home country pharmacy college if you want to be done quickly
Will you be able to attend the School of Pharmacy or the Veterinary School in your country after your US degree?
Once again Thank you! @MYOS1634
If I go to the US, I think I don’t want to attend the School of Pharmacy or the Veterinary School in my country anymore ( because it will need another 6 yrs to graduate and have to retake so many exams ). But if I do go to the US or UK, I think I want to continue my master degree there too, may be in engineering or school of pharmacy ( I heard that in the US it takes another 4 yrs after you receive a bachelor degree??) if I really do want to become a pharmacist anymore.
