I recently heard that I got into a MPhil programme at Cambridge. I applied late and the college I was offered a place at isn’t very wealthy; I wasn’t offered any financial assistance. If I go, I’ll be taking the full amount out in loans (I am a US citizen, so pay international fees). The college I was admitted to within the University has received poor reviews and also lacks facilities - for example, its library is tiny and has very limited hours, so I worry about being able to do my work effectively (many colleges’ libraries are open 7 days a week until 11pm/12am or are 24/7; this college lib. is only open 9am-5pm M-F). For these reasons, I’m considering declining the offer and reapplying for the next year, getting my application in in October, rather than in June.
Do you think I would be less likely to be offered a place if I do this? If nothing else it would allow me to work and save some money so I wouldn’t have so much loan debt and hopefully I’d be able to apply for scholarships and get some help with the costs, but if I’m less likely to be admitted a second time…
I think the programme is excellent, and until I heard bd things about the college and learned about the library facilities and no financial assistance I was so excited. Now I’m disappointed about the college and fearful of the financial situation.
Any advice would be appreciated – particularly from people with experience declining a MPhil offer at Cantab and reapplying. Thank you!
