University of Chicago students?

What kind of undergraduate students choose U of Chicago. How do I know if U of Chicago is right for me?

I think you’ll get much more of a sense of what Chicago students are like as a whole if you look at our sub-forum under “Colleges.”

To make two broad generalizations, U of C students are 1) smart, and 2) like academics. Other than those two generalizations, you’re going to find students who fit in all over the spectrum… some are “preppy” in appearance and demeanor, some are “hipsters,” some are “nerds,” most belong to no identifiable stereotype. Students take academics seriously, but that doesn’t always mean that they work extremely hard. (Many tone down the academics in favor of social or extracurricular activities).

Students who are smart and who don’t like academics that much probably won’t like this school too much, as they will feel like they are being “punished” by being assigned lots of work and by being held to high expectations.

Other schools that I think of as similar to Chicago include: Reed, Swarthmore, Pomona, Carleton, Bryn Mawr, Smith, Oberlin, Yale, Princeton, or any other school that heavily emphasizes the liberal arts, is known for academic students, and sends a lot of students on to PhD programs after graduation.
