I hear that students applying to University of Chicago are self selective. What kind of students do University of Chicago usually take? It seems to me this is more of a personality thing.

Yes and no.

Yes: Chicago students are academically motivated, do well in school, and aren’t afraid to attend a school that its own students call “Where Fun Comes to Die” instead of students bragging about its party scene. (Then again, we’re the kind of school that attracts “Where Fun Comes to Die” sarcasm, and I think part of WFCTD is satirizing people who like to brag about how great their school is).

No: The students who end up attending Chicago often consider attending other elite schools, so our applicant pool and student body is not as completely unique as people might like to make it out to be.
