University of Florida Class of 2028 Official Thread

Not far behind in what sense? They aren’t close in prominent rankings, and both UCSB and UCSD are AAU institutions.

In the sense of acceptance rate, admitted student profile, and mindshare.

Respectfully, UCSD’s research budget is literally ~ 5x that of Florida State. UCSD is ranked #19 in the 2023 Academic Ranking of World Universities. FSU is clustered in the 200 - 300 range. Setting aside UCSD’s relative location / quality of life advantage and other factors of significant consequence, these two institutions are not really in the same league with one another just based on the foregoing comparisons.

I agree we have several amazing Universities in Florida to attend. UF, FSU and USF are all preeminent research universities and UCF (only 60 year old) is categorized as an emerging preeminent research university expected to be designated preeminent in 2027.
A huge deciding factor isn’t so much the institutions overall rank but rather your child’s specific major. FSU has the best criminology program in the U.S., UCF has the best hospitality management and the best competitive programming teams in the country. USF and UF are known for great medical opportunities. Look at the strength of the specific program your child is interested in.

I respect your passion for UCSD. All I meant was the students getting into FSU have a similar academic profile to those accepted and UCSD and UCSB. The acceptance rates are also similar. I agree UCSD is a better overall academic institution and FSU mainly achieves these similarities because of supply/demand. But that should’t diminish the quality of the average FSU student, which is high. We should probably get back on the subject of UF though!

Totally agree! Didn’t intend to diminish FSU, which I just learned has a research budget that’s not that far off from several Ivy League institutions!

Anxiously awaiting Friday, hoping for the best!

Weird that this thread is short short in comparison to other schools on here.

Anyways, good luck to all this week. Nervous anticipation.

Here’s the UF common data set for entering class of 2022-23 (current sophomores).

It’s the most recent released. My guess is that the current freshmen are about the same or a tiny bit higher, just bc they had a few more applications. And probably will be a little bit higher again this year bc it was looking like about 10% more applications. But you never know. Just based on what I saw last year, it def wasn’t all about test scores.

What does it take for honors? Any info on the acceptance rate or general profile of an accepted honors student? I have a 1510 SAT and am OOS hoping for UF Honors

Here is the info for that First-Year Honors Program (FHP) Admissions - Honors - University of Florida. Looks like your SAT is in the range for honors.

A 1510 is in the middle 50% for current class, but again, it is definitely not all about test scores for honors based on what I saw last year. Also many more honors applicants this year. One thing I saw in a presentation suggested many fewer OOS kids compared to in-state in honors this year. I don’t know if that’s bc kids offered honors spots from OOS wound up choosing another place or something else. I’ll try to find the pic I took of that slide to see if I can share.

The Admission officer told me that as well. While admissions is not based on state residency, honors admissions are.

We’ll see if this works. Pictures from a December presentation about application trends. If it works, I’ll upload pics from an admission stats presentation from last June.

Great info. Thanks!

Wait I thought the florida publics were going to h*ll in a handbasket due to Sasse and Desantis, or something like that. And faculty fleeing in droves? :man_facepalming:

DeSantis is the reason many of us are choosing Florida.

Can I ask why? If you’re comfortable explaining of course. Feel free to DM me if you don’t want to say publicly as well, I’m just interested in hearing your point of view.

It’s not why my kid chose UF. I don’t agree with the vast majority of what DeSantis is doing. But I think UF remains a great school for kids who can handle its bigness, and the school itself is doing much to make managing its bigness easier.

I prefer to focus on UF itself and not Flirida politics in general.

I think if you lean right politically, the conservative state government and UF president make the school more attractive. Most universities lean very far to the left of the political spectrum.

One reason my d24 applied had nothing to do with politics, just this very flawed logic:

  1. UF has conservative leadership.
  2. Most students are liberal.
  3. Consequently, less will apply and she can get in easier!

And yet, both UF and FSU increased by about 7k apps this year, probably because the liberal students didn’t really care and/or it attracted more conservative students, or both.
