You’re definitely right! Reading through last year’s thread I saw a lot of students + parents surprised at not being given honors despite near perfect test scores!
Yeah - definitely not 30%!
Excellent question and yes it is. I’m taking 5 classes for the Spring. UF does modules that are 8 weeks in the Spring and Fall. 6 weeks in the Summer. I just have one more week for this first module and then will start the next half of Sping at the beginning of March. I currently have all A’s in my first 3 classes. I also had the concern I wouldn’t be up to par compared to students who attended UF and FSU but I’m doing just fine. The classes are not easy by any stretch of the imagination. But I’m faring just fine if not better then students that attended those schools for undergrad.
I feel like all of them claim to be holistic but there’s definitely an emphasis on test scores throughout the State System. I agree with your assessment though; it seems that UF takes more of a holistic approach to things (not to say that they aren’t super competitive!) just because of the amount of applicants they received. Honestly it seems like every high schooler in Florida applies lol.
Thank you for your insight! Best of luck during the rest of your graduate education!
It may just look that way on the outside. Remember, this is the 3rd most populous state and UF is the most academically prestigious institution. Because of Bright Futures, just about every kid in the state with a 1500+ SAT will apply to UF and UF Honors. They can’t all get in to UF Honors.
Also - UCF only requires 12 credits to maintain your scholarship, but FSU requires 15. So just something to think about b/c I have heard stories of people losing their scholarship b/c they had to drop a class.
Thank you and I’m glad to help.
I think my daughter has more like 1480-1490. Not 1560. Great ECs and leadership. I definitely have heard of many people with 1560+ being rejected at UF. We’ll see. She has other good options so wouldn’t be the end of the world. No idea what to expect OOS.
Yes that is a big difference
I have similar stats, and also don’t know what to expect. I think I will get in, at least for pace but that is probably just wishful thinking on my part.
Yes when my son applied you needed a 1390 minimum to get Vires and he had a 1370, but they didn’t let the applicants know until after what the SAT score was to qualify. I would have made him take it one more time to increase the score, but he chose UF instead, so it didn’t matter.
You’re OOS, correct? I think that you have a pretty firm shot. I’ve seen you in a few threads and I just want to wish you the best of luck. No matter where you end up, you’ll do great! And I’m sure you already have some options!
Thanks. Yes, OOS. I’m not worried about anymore. I will be commiting to FSU if I don’t get in on Friday. The tution waiver made it very attractive since I will likely be able to graduate debt free.
I definitely wish more in Florida schools would post the stats to scholarship amount like other states do. It would definitely make it easier to know for sure what the amount is guaranteed before applying. I know UNF does it which made it my safety school because I knew I was assured 20k (over the four years).
She looks like a very strong contender to me.
Congrats! The tuition waiver is definitely a major burden-remover! Also I’m wondering how many Florida students will be committing to various schools on Friday since it seems most of their top choices (plus what seems like the final school to release decisions) is UF. I know I’ll be deciding before March!
When did your son apply?
Yes - and also for FSU, the initial housing contract group submission time end two days after UF’s decision comes out. So a lot of activity will be happening. We’ll probably not commit anywhere until the end of March (after we visit the schools).
That FSU OOS waiver is pretty incredible value. Makes me a fan of the school even if they do it for self interest to attract strong students.
