University of Florida Class of 2028 Official Thread

The summer requirement is a state regulation that applies to all of the SUS institutions. The 9 hours must be done through one of the state universities in Florida (either in person or online) or 6 credits of study abroad in the summer. Tuition is based on how many credit hours a student is taking - it is not a set block fee. Since many students take 12 hours a semester (the minimum for financial aid consideration) the state instituted the summer requirement to to help “catch up” on credit hours.

I anticipate the sign up for admitted student days to go out on Thursday. There is a majors fair/ the ability to talk to someone representing each college about various majors.

It’s out - follow link in yesterday’s parent email logging into admissions account with email address. I found using my PC was easier to navigate than phone

It does not look like engineering has many, which raises concern for the summer class requirements - not enough online classes and therefore having to be in person (OOS students)

@Melissa96 Can you start the summer requirement this summer, or do you have to wait until next year?

At UF?, if the student was admitted for summer then yes it counts otherwise it would need to be a future summer.

I also would love to hear others’ perspectives on this, particularly from those who did a deep dive into other schools.

OK, so if I have fall start date, I would need to wait until next year. Do you know if different schools/programs have a list of summer classes that they recommend their students take? As well as an approved list for classes at other in-state schools? As an engineering student, I do not see as many options over the summer as there are for other majors, and even less online. As an OOS student, I am concerned about my ability to complete this requirement if I cannot afford to in person for multiple summers.

They are out already. I think 3/22, 4/5, 4/8, 4/12 and 4/15.

I would save some Gen Eds to take over the summer
There are also waivers and some of the criteria are a summer internship, financial hardship or lack of courses
However they are not guaranteed and reviewed by a committee https://registrar.ufl.edu/assets/pdfs/summer_enrollment_waiver.pdf

Florida Shines can be helpful to see what is taught at the other SUS schools in person or online Find Online College Courses Florida | Online Classes (floridashines.org) Students would of course work with their advisors before taking the course to make sure it is something that will meet degree requirements, be helpful for graduation.

@Melissa96
Is there a date when my daughter would know whether or not she qualified for an OOS merit waiver?

My in laws live in Florida, but she missed the SAT requirement for grandparent tuition by 20 points. Is the grandparent waiver only based on SAT scores?

Thanks you!

SAT/ACT does have a minimal requirement. We are expecting merit offers to go out early March.

Honestly some decisions at UF just make little to no sense as to why things happen :woman_shrugging:

My kid is top 1% of his high ranking FL HS with 4.0 uw with 22 APs , NMF , the top writing award for the last two years ( so his essay was very well written ) and 4 year two sport varsity, numerous clubs and Eagle Scout with another several hundred hours of volunteer work got into UF but Not honors … they are giving him a full COA scholarship but not honors

So lots of things where they will never tell people why

I was done with this thread and moving on when this popped up. My child currently has 4 A’s in classes last semester and this semester at UF (Their DE program you have to apply to as a Jr), along with glowing remarks from one of her professors who requested she enroll in another of her classes in the Fall. Unfortunately that’s not possible. Somehow, she’s an A student at UF taking high level course work not joke classes and actually tutoring two other current UF students struggling in a class….yet they’ve determined she isn’t good enough for an acceptance despite as balanced a resume as you will find in community and athletics along with the rest and a top 7% of 1000 grad class in a FL public school. Some things don’t make sense. At all. Ours is a situation where some transparency would be nice

Melissa,
Do you know when tuition exchange scholarship will come out? Thanks.

Sorry to hear that. I feel your pain. Good luck to her!

The bursar’s office said April. I am hoping for sooner.

As someone whos OOS, would it be better to go to an admitted student tour or to go to Florida Days?

I think Florida Days is probably better - and I think I read somewhere they give you some swag (not 100% sure). I would totally go to it, but the dates don’t work for me - so just doing admitted students tour.

Did anyone else sign up for preview yet? My daughter only had two dates to choose from. Just curious if others had different options?
