Yes, it was. Her child got rejected with a 1300 SAT and she has done nothing but flood the board here with negativity. Even worse, her earlier post bashed FSU and Tallahassee. As I said earlier, this poor woman, Melissa, has been here trying to help everyone and she has to read the nonsense.
What is your studentās SAT or ACT score?
Iāll have to call or email then, because I checked my common app and I definitely did fill it out saying Iād have it. Is that the email that would be contacted if I emailed via the contact admissions page/form? And should I email from gator mail now that it is set up?
Your application email would be best right now
Hello. We just saw an update on my DD application portal that she is waitlisted for grandparent waiver. Does anyone know if there a way to find out how far down the list she is on the waitlist? Trying to assess if it will be worth holding out hope.
Thank you.
Thank you! You are the best!!
Last year my son was waitlisted until the day after he committed (about May 1 to 4, I think ā Friday to Monday). He applied in November immediately after submitting his application to UF. We tried asking many UF people about where he was on the WL and no one could tell us. In the end, he decided it was the place he wanted to go even without the full tuition waiver (he had a much smaller merit-based partial tuition waiver). But we were thrilled that it worked out. A classmate who applied in October got off the WL before she had to commit.
No idea if it will be the same this year; Melissa has reported (unsurprisingly) that more people become aware of it and apply each year (it only started two years ago).
His SAT score is 1580 ( 800 m 780 w)
In case your child didnāt receive a favorable decision, Iād like to share this. My younger brother bombed at Virginia Tech, the only college he was admitted to. A year later he transferred into Northern Virginia Community College to fix his grades, which he did. He then transferred to UVa and graduated with an economics degree with reasonable grades. He worked as an analyst at what is now a 1st tier investment bank and then went into a related industry a couple of years later. Heās now nationally known in his industry.
I knew a guy who attended 5 colleges which youāve never ever heard of. He ended up getting a Harvard MBA. Remind your child itās what he/she makes of his life. Colleges offer opportunities, not guarantees. And itās not over until itās over.
Note there are two steps to the automatic admission process at UT Austin for in state residents. Everyone meeting the top 6% threshold is admitted to the school then one must wait several more weeks to find out if theyāre admitted to their first, second, or third choice major. My kids all fit into the automatic admission and secured their first choice major (all in natural sciences) but none attended. They have many friends who did not receive their first choice major. My daughter said that none of the four top 10 kids in her class who applied for computer science at UT Austin received that choice of major. One was admitted to linguistics which has nothing to do with computer science. The reason this is a problem is that unlike almost all other colleges it is virtually impossible to change majors once starting at UT Austin. They instituted a policy where someone has to vacate a major before one can get into it. Itās like playing musical chairs where all the seats are full so no one moves. This policy on changing majors pushed Austinās 6 yr graduation rate up from the 50 something percent to 82% by forcing kids to graduate timely versus taking much longer due to losing credits from changing majors.
Thanks!
Hiā daughter was admitted to the Honors Program, and weāre trying to figure out which type of re-visit day will give her the most insight into that program. It seems like one of the six āScheduled Campus Visitā days would be the more thorough than FL days since the SCV days include lunch w the Luminaries, but Iām afraid Iām missing something. Anyone have any insight? She fell in love with the campus went we visited last February, and my daughter is very torn between FL Honors and UNC regular (which she also loves and where her brother is currently a junior).
OSS parent with DD on the grandparent waitlist. She wants to commit and move forward, but is concerned that it may have an impact on merit scholarships. Does anyone have any insight on how the merit scholarships are handled?
It should not have an impact. People say that it does matter for some other schools, but in practice I have not really seen any major discrepancies in merit for those committed vs. not.
I have the same question. How can we register for one of these honors days?
My daughter deciding between UVA and UF honors, not sure how selective the honors program is, she was also deferred by Duke
My OOS D24 is taking a tour this Friday. Itās not an admitted student tour, but just a general campus tour, which I suspect will be mostly HS juniors doing their pre-application tours.
Sheās had to fit in several tours for schools she hasnāt seen in person yet this winter/spring, and we didnāt want to wait to schedule before decisions were released.
For those who have done a general campus tour, will she see inside different buildings? And specifically, will she get to see an example or two of a dorm and dining hall? Sheās been on a few tours where they didnāt go inside any buildings, which is super frustrating as we took the time and spent the money to fly to these colleges in hopes of seeing more than a self guided walking tour.
TIA!
@4GoodKids @mw24 I also would like to know about admitted studentās day and honors. I want to be able to compare between schools.
Yes, we got to go inside several buildings, the library, and dining areas. Itās a good tour. First time we did it, my son fell in love. Second time he did it, on a high-school trip, the guide wasnāt as good and he fell a little out of love. He got honors and heās ecstatic so he committed.
If you plan to spend the night, Eleo is a nice hotel. Very close. Afternoon is a nice little off-campus breakfast spot (short drive).
Jennings Hall is supposed to have daily tours on a walk in basis. Also, I believe there are two main dining halls - one at Broward and the other is called Gator Corner - but due to construction the Broward one is inside a tent at the moment.
