Has anyoneâs in-state admitted student that happens to be a National Merit Semifinalist heard any word from UF that they will be offered a National Merit Scholarship from UF and Benaquisto if they advance to finalist status? My student has heard this from FSU, UCF, and USF, but nothing from UF as of yet.
When it comes to the Florida Benacquisto scholarship - if we are the studentâs first school by the May 1st deadline then the scholarship will be awarded.
Do you know how often the Grandparent Waivers are updated? Is it set days or as they become available? Thank you!
It is as they become available.
Daughter accepted. 1440 SAT for CS major. GPA was 4.37 weighted and 3.97 u/w. Tons of volunteering and clubs and also a full IB DP candidate. About 9 APs and others were honors.
Congratulations!
Does anyone know if itâs possible to retake the SAT to qualify for the grandparents waiver? I was under the impression 1330 was an 89th percentile score, and unfortunately I needed to get a 1340. Iâm very disappointed because otherwise I qualify and the waiver would likely make it cheaper than my in state flagship. I was selected for Honors + URSP so I feel like the arbitrary ânot good enoughâ score of 10 points off is a little disheartening. Could I retake in March and reapply when my score comes out?
Does having Florida Prepaid hurt your chances of acceptance? What if you have moved OOS but are applying âinstate for tuition purposesâ?
No, it doesnât affect your admission chances.
The grandparent waiver is offered on a first come first served basis, and there are only about 350 or so available in total (spread across the 12 public universities). The existing waivers allocated to UF were distributed with the EA acceptances in January. No more will become available to UF students until those who already received them decline their UF acceptance and enroll elsewhere. An unused waiver would go to the next accepted student with a qualifying score and documentation on the waiver waitlist. The list is determined by the date the waiver form (with qualifying documentation) was received.
UFâs allocation for students entering in fall 2025 is 159 waivers, but in the past UF received some unused extra waivers from other schools. When all was said and done UF wound up with 184 last year (due to unused waivers from other schools being reallocated to UFâs waitlist during the summer).
Test scores for EA were due by November 15, 2024. I donât know if Admissions would accept another score. When did you file the waiver form? Did someone notify you that you didnât qualify due to the score and would have received one otherwise? I believe they would have moved onto the next qualifying accepted student on the list if so. You would have to check with Admissions to ask if you could submit a new test score and reapply for the waiver, but if they say yes, I believe the new submission date is the one that counts. You wouldnât necessarily receive your original waiver form submission date.
UF doesnât set the rules for the waiver so Honors and URSP status doesnât inform the decision. The state of Florida sets the benchmark by statute, and the score coincides with the qualifying score for Bright Futures (for FL resident students).
Iâm so torn on this âonline classesâ thing. We went to Florida Days. I seem more concerned than my son, though, which I think is common. Students arenât as bothered as the parents-especially if they think itâs the right school otherwise.
This is great info about the # of waivers. We are holding out hope for a Grandparent waiver to UF. Received at FSU (he applied later - 9/30 GP waiver submitted to UF)-but S25 committed to UF. Crossing my fingers!
Hope it comes through for you. My daughter received one and committed to UF for the fall.
Our Gator who didnât like online classes in High School due to Covid.
Likes to have about half of her classes online just for the flexibility and this semester was annoyed she has to go to campus everyday.
My son, like many, is having MAJOR senioritis. He just âdoesnât want to be in high school anymoreâ. and heâs having trouble motivating himself to do his school work. First semester was great. He ended up with a 4.5 GPA. This semesterâŠwill be a different story. He has 6 classes - 4 of them APs. It wouldnât shock me if he ended up with a C in AP Calc, 1 or 2 As and the rest Bs. Is this going to be an issue when he sends in his final transcript? He had 1 B in grades 9-11.
While we do look at studentâs senior year grades when finalizing records, one C will not cause an application to be rescinded. Lower than that, it becomes more likely. Of the very small number of students who flunk out at the end of their first semster, you can usually look back and see the grades going down in the senior year. Hopefully heâs just having a moment and after Spring Break will close out with a stronger finish.
Thank you for this.
@Melissa96 This is good to hear. My son had one B going into Senior year - all Aâs otherwise. This year, he opened up the school year with a massive concussion and missed a month of school. Despite having 5 AP courses, he is maintaining all Aâs and Bâs for now. There is a chance he ends up with a C+ in AP Calc though based on some recent test scores, although he is trying really hard to bring it up. Itâs been such a difficult year since he missed so much school and has been playing catch up the entire year. We were freaking out about him getting some more Bâs and potentially a C. We had planned on submitting documentation about the concussion regardless, but it is nice to know that UF isnât overly hard on the kids.
Hi Melissa- Can you provide an update on the appeals status at UF, such as how many admission appeals were received. I understand the appeals are reviewed in order of receipt, so do you know where the committee is (based upon date of receipt) in its review and when all appeals for the early action round (which were due by March 7) will receive a decision?
