@Melissa96 I’m gathering you have a connection to the admissions office based on your responses, do you know if UF holds special admitted students days or programs?
Does anyone happen to know how well the business school students do with recruiting? And are they recruited for jobs mostly in Florida and the South? Thanks!
The dates for Florida days which is for admitted students is on the uf website.
@FknMom2020 - Yes, I believe we are going to have 5 total days in March and April. More information will be out about registering for them soon.
All this hysteria and whining comes down to this statistical fact. Any applicant trying to obtain the Lombardi or Stamps scholarship had a 0.0006% chance of being selected. The body of top students who reduced that number to 700 from the original 9,000 was the same body for EVERY applicant. The fact you don’t like that you weren’t selected doesn’t change your chances. Even now the chosen applicants of around 700 have a 0.0078 chance of being selected. Out of those 700 NONE will be chosen by a student…only the Director and other academia. Pretty obvious that having a hissy fit over such statistical odds is silly and entitled imo.
To all those who made it in to UF you will absolutely love the college whether in honors or not. UF is certainly on the rise and the quality of students being admitted is top notch.
Does anyone know when the merit scholarships are released? I saw that it says beginning of March, anyone have an idea on what day?
Please advise if business major have to take a lot of online classes. I’ve been hearing that some kids take up to 1/2 of their credits online. I’m not talking about pace but regular. Thank you
@amsunshine To be sure, I have no dog in this fight either. My D, with her good, but not stellar stats would not have made into the Honors program with or without the essay. We are perfectly happy and grateful to have the option to go to UF (for free at that, due to Benacquisto)
It is just that I thought people should be allowed to express their complaints without others jumping on them and judging them. I do agree the need to temper the language while complaining.
Who applied for Lombardi and Stamps and was admitted to the honors program?
@tnknes No judgment here. I’m all for discussions and expressing opinions, but was genuinely surprised by the level of venom and negativity toward a well-known policy that has been discussed a number of times on these boards.
@MB2020 that’s a great question I would also like to know. Back in “my day” at Florida a couple of the core business classes (MKT MGT) were taped and “replayed” but not a ton. I have a son at Alabama and he has never had online business classes, nor “taped ones”.
@Rubix1 @MB2020 My D and I have looked through UF’s class schedules and we can confirm there are a number of lower division courses in her major(s) (accounting and info systems) that are online only (not even any options for live courses). We also looked through general business courses and saw a few there, too. You should look through their course listings for yourself to see if you are comfortable with the number of online only courses offered. It is definitely something my D is factoring into her decision about whether or not to attend UF.
@amsunshine would you mind posting a link to where we can look up classes to see if they are only offered online?
Also, wondering if anyone else’s acceptance letter indicates that the $200 tuition depost is being waived…
@amsunshine thank you…wow. Not what I expected.
@Mom2NND Here you go: https://registrar.ufl.edu/soc/
Scroll down and click on class listings. Then select the semester, program, program level and department.
@Mom2NND, my son’s letter also indicated that.
Well thanks @amsunshine…things have changed. My son at Alabama has had no online business classes and the relationship with certain professors (even at the basic levels) has been a very positive thing. But the world is a’changing so I appreciate the insight so we can debate any potential pros and/or cons…
All this hysteria and whining comes down to this statistical fact. 100% of the students eligible for the Stamps and Lombardi scholarships are chosen by students. Let that soak in.
@Rubix1 @MB2020 I have a Sophomore Gator majoring in Finance. I can confirm that many of the classes the first two years are online. There is usually a section that is live (early in the morning) that a student can attend and it is recorded for the rest of the online sections. A student from the online sections can attend the live lecture (on a space available basis) if desired. Anecdotally, the first week or so is well attended, and then there is plenty of space the rest of the semester. Students this age typically like the online lecture format and don’t like 8:30am lectures…
As someone else posted, this is no different than 25 years ago when I was at UF and the classes were recorded in the morning and the other sections watched a recording of it in the lecture hall later in the day. The difference now is that the lecture is available 24/7 for reference when preparing for exams.
Some other thoughts on this:
- Even if you go to the live lecture, there is not a lot of interaction, it is a lecture.
- The benefits of having 24/7 access to the lectures, being able to pause, go back, etc. are a positive.
- There are typically weekly or more frequent quizzes or assignments that force students to keep up with the material. This is not across the board, I seem to remember that Fin Acct. was just 3 exams making up the grade.
- The professors and TAs are available like any other class.
- We have to keep in mind that we are not the ones going to school and our kids may have a different view on this than we do.
My son has not started taking the upper level classes, so I am not as familiar with the format of those. His classes have been the entry-level business classes that all Business majors have to take.
Hope this helps.
@Rubix1 @MB2020 @amsunshine Same concerns here. This is one of the key differences and a major one when comparing many of the Direct Admit Business schools to say UF. I would agree that the students probably like the online part of it vs having to go to class. I have read somewhere that it is a little bit of a “hybrid” set up where it is a combination of both. I just wonder if they are getting a great education especially when you consider UF Status as one of the Elite public schools and what it takes to get admitted. I do not know the answer to that. Some kids need structure and need organization in order to get into a rhythm, especially the first year of college. The business school is highly thought of and as you all know UF as a University is also viewed as one of the top public universities in the country. I would love to hear more about the actual outcomes and feedback.
