@fl1234 Thank you. I am at least one Gator grad that mentioned some business classes (when I was there) were recorded. (I remember how crowded the playback room would be as we would binge on 3 or more lectures at a time lol). But I also remember it was only a handful of classes…and not accounting 1/2, which I see is now online, as well as business law. None of my upper level management or finance classes were taped, and I hope that is the case now. I do need to understand this model a little better. My oldest son has the same online weekly checkpoints such as homework and quizzes–but I think that is just the status quo in college (even our early college coursework has that) but the experience of being in a classroom with a live teacher (who answers individual questions, encourages office hours etc) as well as physical classmates has been a huge plus. It doesn’t mean an online model isn’t effective, but it is different and not something we have seen from my second son’s other potential colleges. So I will see if I can find some more feedback. Open minded…good luck to all in your decisions and next steps!
Correct! The top essay students are 100% responsible for the 0.0006% and 0% responsible for the remaining 0.0078%. The same system that has worked quite well for them all these years. I get the feeling UF is quite happy with the system they currently use since the results have been quite satisfying in their eyes. If they weren’t happy with the quality of students making it to the final round they would change the system I’m sure.
For those that make it to the semi final round of 22 just understand the incredible work you’ve done both academically and with your essay. It’s quite a testimony when you consider the overall competition of the original 9,000 vying for that position. The final interview process to actually pick the final 11 can be nerve-wracking. There really isn’t a way to prepare so just be yourself and answer not on how you think they want you to answer but how you truly feel. Best of luck!

My son was admitted, but no mention of what program/school. No honors college.
Stats:
Accepted: Yes
In State
35 ACT
3.8 uw, 4.6 w (Cambridge program)
2 Varsity sports, Golf team captain,
He was also admitted to Tulane, our alma matter, with $24k/year scholarship. But still a $50k/year cost of attendance.
Love Tulane, but UF is such an amazing value. I heard Tulane will also match the bright futures scholarship offering. Anyone know if that is true? (sorry if this is not the forum to ask)
The concern about UF is because my son has Dyslexia and ADD.
I worry about the big, impersonal impression I have of UF.
Worried he will be swallowed up by the sheer scale of UF.
Should this be a concern for us? Thoughts please?
@UFHopefulmom It depends. For regular summer/fall admission it does not matter whether you pick a major or are undecided. If your child is not offered admission to their preferred semester and is interested in a secondary program (PaCE or Santa Fe Engineering) then major definitely comes into play. If a PaCE major is not selected then PaCE is not an option. It is the same with the engineering programs.
Sadly today was a lot of - Why didn’t I even get a PaCE offer? And the answer a lot of the time is that the student didn’t choose a PaCE major.
@GoGreenWave I had similar reservations about UF. This is my thread u might find useful: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-florida/2160724-transition-from-hs-home-to-uf-p1.html
Ultimately, you know your child best so forget about prestige, legacy, etc and think of what he really needs to be successful then choose the school where he can get that. Yes, he obviously has the raw intelligence needed to be successful at a top school. That’s not an issue. If he is like my daughter, it is the environment that will make him or break him.
@Melissa96 Thank you! I told my daughter so she will definitely look at all majors within PaCE and IA in order to take advantage of the most opportunities. Another question…If you check the box for Innovation Academy, are you automatically considered for that only?
My daughter would prefer a summer B or Fall enrollment, but wants to keep her options 100% open. With that being said, we have heard if you “check the box” for IA, you will automatically be put there, even with a Summer or Fall preference and the stats to match that admission.
UF is her #1 choice to attend. Would love any clarification you may be able to provide. Thank you!
If she is truly interested in Innovation Academy then definitely check the box for consideration. It does not limit our evaluation to only IA. There are many students who said they were interested in IA who were admitted to summer or fall (and if IA is what they want the most then they can put in a term change request to be put into it). There are other students who are only offered IA and that is the only offer that they have at UF.
@Melissa96 Great info…thank you! One last question…if you are accepted and enroll into Innovation Academy, are you able to apply for the Medical Honors Program and matriculate into that if accepted? I know once you are in Innovation you may not transfer to Fall, so wondering if this would be an issue?
@Melissa96 Thank you for sharing so much of your knowledge. Considering there is a significant amount of online learning at UF, can you tell me how students who are struggling with online content or have questions about it would go about seeking out that further understanding? Is it a matter of relying on office hours? Going to tutoring? Or are there Recitation classes for the online courses to review the material and address questions? TIA!
@hollywo00d Same concerns here. UF is the premier public University in Florida and the whole Southeast. It is incredibly difficult to get accepted to and its ranking speaks for itself. But then you hear so much about this online thing, it is somewhat concerning. Having said that, everyone seems to love the Gators and we are very excited to tour the school and get a feel for it. My D18 attends the ultra-large tOSU and in the first two years at the Business school, she did not take one online class. Many of the prerequisites were in large auditoriums, but they also had smaller breakout sections with a TA. So I do not know if it works the same way at UF.
It depends on your major, there certainly are programs that have online courses (business) but there are many other majors that do not have any classes online. There is always office hours, TAs, Broward Tutoring Center, and outside tutoring that students use for courses no matter which delivery format.
@Melissa96 Thank you. Are there any options for classroom only classes in the business school? Is this just for the prerequisites or lower-level classes or it works the same way for upper-division classes or once the student gets into his/her major?
