University of Georgia Early Action for Fall 2024 Admission

So I think it is 100% AP thing - they give extra “quality points” in their gpa calculation for AP/IB classes, but not anything else. Our school chooses not to offer many APs but offers very rigorous honors classes that are in many cases college level and tougher than AP classes.

It is too bad because I think UGA loses some top candidates for this reason. My son was very interested in UGA for honors and when he did not get auto-admit and heard about others from other schools with lower unweighted gpas and sat/act scores than he has, he started moving towards being more interested in other schools - as he is much less interested in uga without honors. I hope they send out honors college notifications soon to the highly qualified kids from non-AP schools. Our guidance counselor indicated that our kid should absolutely get an honor college invitation but would probably just need to wait for it…

Yes, she feels the same way. The thing is, my daughter because she is a magnet Biotech Academy has about 4 more science classes than the average AP/IB student and has done really interesting research. Hopefully they see these accomplishments from transcript/application.

I suspect they will take all that into account and she will get in. Be patient.

When do decisions come out for those who were deferred ?

It will come out with RD decisions in March.

My daughter is now registered for the January New Dawgs day. Coming from OOS.

We went out to the New Dawgs to register and both Jan 29 and March 1 are full and the waitlist is full.

We did not realize how quickly the New Dawgs days would fill up and did not get a spot either. My daughter has never visited campus and we are OOS (flying distance). Of course the other regular visit days for admitted students are in the middle of the week. Does anyone have any recommendations for how/when to see campus since we can’t make it to the New Dawgs Days? Is it worth it to take off school and fly out in the middle of the week to attend the regular visit days or should we just skip those and come on a Friday/Saturday. Any particular dates that would be fun? Any dates to avoid?

It’s best to see any school on a weekday but you have to balance your personal needs - work, school, etc as kids can’t be out too many. If you can only do a Saturday, you’ll still get a sense of both the enormity of the campus and surrounds and there will be plenty on campus. And you might still be able to arrange a meeting with a student ambassador or club leader, even on weekends.

I’m still amazed/impressed/in awe of how they integrate the football stadium into campus. Super cool !!!

I hate that theses things fill up (not just a UGA problem). But I think a visit during a regular weekday is prob a more accurate rep of what the campus vibe is like anyway. just hang around the center of campus (like around Tate Student Center and Bolton Dining) and watch students come and go, and follow the packs as they trek up the stairs to North Campus for classes. It’s especially helpful if your kid knows someone from thier high school or whatever who can show them around a little and hang out at night with them (if you stay overnight).

I don’t think the New Dawgs program was what made the decision for my daughter to go to UGA. It didn;t hurt, but it was more meeting students and going out at night with a girl from her high school.

also can you call admissions and see if they can squeeze you in since you are OOS?

For those who did not get accepted to honors with their EA acceptance and completed the separate honors application, does anyone know when UGA notifies with the decision? Is it rolling? Is it after RD?

If she can take the time off, you should come for one of the regular tours during the week. The fact that they put you on a bus to see the extent of campus is helpful. You’ll also be able to eat at the dining hall. If I were flying in, I would want to see as many people as possible to get the vibe. We are in-state, so tuition is free if my daughter accepts. We are going to make our 3rd visit in March. Honestly, I would also suggest that your daughter try to sneak into a classroom building to peek in at a class! We’re going to try it at a school where classroom visits don’t happen.

I believe the Honors College decisions will be released after RD. I’ve heard “late March.”

I called yesterday (we are coming from NJ) and they wouldn’t allow 2 of us to squeeze into a tour as the bus holds 40 people and they said it was a safety issue. I talked to three separate offices and was told to do a self-guided walking tour…Hello, we are flying from NJ and actually want to ask questions/talk to someone :slightly_smiling_face:

Are you on the UGA parents Facebook page? In the past I’ve seen students offer to do guided tours for a small fee. Might be worth checking out.

Yes, I am. I actually had the same thought, but figured I’d ask the school first.
Given I’m flying in for this purpose, I’d feel better if it was a tour through the school as if something comes up with the student offering to do the tour, we are stuck and it’s a long way to come. At least with admissions if someone gets sick, tied up, has unforeseen circumstances, others can step in and run the tour.

What we did everywhere - walk and talk. Stop kids. Stop adults. Ask questions.

UGA is huge - hence the bus. But we parked and walked.

Better that way in some instances.

Yes you’re coming from far. But you can still do what you need - maybe even better.

Any departments you want to see ? Call and ask to set up a meeting. Same with a group - for example we met some Hillel leaders.

Also make sure you walk the surrounds. I think my daughter was happiest when she found the Urban Outfitters.

Honestly, you can still have a great experience, maybe even as good or better than the canned and staged production.

My son got deferred from UGA after applying EA for fall 2024 (school of engineering). Yesterday he received an e-mail from UGA school of engineering inviting him to visit and experience all that UGA engineering has to offer. We also noticed that in his portal his previously assigned advisor was changed to “UGA admissions”. Has anyone gotten anything similar? Should we read anything into this?

FWIW, I found individual student led tours to be better because the student was able to speak more freely. And since the tour was always on foot, we got a better sense of the campus.

When we toured GT in October, every time a person asked a question the “host” referred the person to one of GT’s web pages. We toured in person to be able to ask questions and get answers, but instead, we found out which web page could answer our question. Needless to say, my son is not enrolling at GT.

That is interesting. I have taken a lot of Georgia Tech tours from admission tours to admitted student tours, and I’ve never had that experience. I do know that a tour guide can absolutely make or break a school - we have had that experience both ways. My GT freshman is a tour guide starting this semester - I will definitely advise him not to answer questions by saying read the website😂
