<p>My DS and I are headed to look at UH in a week and heard that crime was very big issue at UH…anyone know?</p>
<p>UH is located in Fifth Ward or is it Third Ward (I know it’s one of those two). When you are driving, the area around UH might look a little shady, because UH’s location is considered the “ghetto”, by most people who live in Northern Houston or who live in the suburbs in general. Also, it’s not like you are stuck on campus for the whole weekend, you can take the metro to go to the other nicer parts of the city.</p>
<p>Students are cautious about bringing their cars there, because it might get stolen. But, would you get shot up or mugged when walking down the street? No. It is all about basic street smarts that is needed if anyone is living in any urban area. THERE ARE BLACK PEOPLE AROUND,I don’t mean to offend, but I don’t know what it is, but my friends who go to UH and people I know act like they didn’t know black people attended UH. Looking at the statistics, each race is about 20% represented at UH, so you will see a sizable amount of hispanics, african-americans, and asians.</p>
<p>On another note, lots of TSU students like to loiter around,and they are the ones who tend to make trouble (nothing serious, more like disturbing the public peace), which in turn makes UH impose more rules on their own student body (even though they aren’t the ones causing the problems). Security is pretty good, you have to show ID in order to get into dorms, and also guests have to show some form of ID. Just the fact that you have an ID in which you have to use for a whole lot of privelages, just shows how much security is enforced here. </p>
<p>I know my post about UH’s security may sound negative, but just visit, it really comes down to one’s personal tastes. Personally, UH is the only Texas public school that I am applying to (and I get in automatically to every texas public school in the state) so I do have options and I could apply to UT-Austin because it’s seen as more “prestigious”, but UT-Austin doesn’t “fit” me, while UH does “fit”. Now does that mean that if I get accepted to Rice, that I would reject it for UH. BIG RESOUNDING NO, but UH is definitely one of those rare and elusive safteties that one can actually love, and I wouldn’t mind going there if I were rejected by every single one of the schools on my list.</p>
<p>U of H definitely has some positives. For instance, the Law Center has the number 1 ranked health law program and number 5 ranked intellectual property law program in the nation. </p>
<p>I wouldn’t think safety would be the main negative. The area is no different than any other urban located college. Probably the biggest negative the school fights is the fact that it is a big commuter school and most kids live off campus. They have been trying for years to get a create a more collegiate experience. All the pieces are there, decent school, decent sports, (the cheer squad is elite and world-ranked believe it or not)…but when you are in such a huge urban area, it stands to reason, you will get a large commuter student body.</p>
