University of Houston vs. TAMUCC for mathematics major

Hello,

I’ve been accepted to both University of Houston as well as TAMUCC as a mathematics major. I know that, as far as rankings go, U of H is ranked much higher than TAMUCC (at least in this particular major). However, I also know that my class sizes will be smaller at TAMUCC than at U of H. Because of this, I would expect that in a case where I ever needed assistance in my studies or wanted to discuss an interesting topic more in depth my professors at TAMUCC would be more willing to help and discuss than my professors at U of H. This is my dilemma that I simply can’t seem to solve.

Please leave your opinions below as to what your recommendations are in my choice for a school. Thank you.

It’s hard to believe the classes for math will be so large at UH that you couldn’t have discussions. Look at the bios of the instructors at each college to see if those are things you would interested in learning. Advanced classes have a habit of being in the same research areas as the professors.

@RikkyAyala‌ - Completely agree with Erin’s Dad, and also would add that once you get past the intro classes, which for all I know you might have placed out of one or 2 of them, the classes will get smaller quickly. Upper level math classes on multivariate topography (just made that up) don’t tend to be super popular with the hoi polloi.

I think the value of starting at UH and having more choices of math specialties to choose from in your junior and senior years outweigh the short term benefit of MAYBE having smaller intro classes at TAMUCC. Even that isn’t really a sure thing. Intro Calc classes tend to be large everywhere, and is there really a difference if, and this is just guessing, TAMUCC happens to have 50 people in the lecture and UH has 100? Also, math profs are usually happy to discuss math and so would no doubt make themselves available even outside of office hours, unless the prof happens to be particularly curmudgeonly.
