UMD does not admit by college nor major. The university is made up of a bunch of colleges and each college includes a bunch of majors.
At time of application, a student will enter a major preference, or choose undecided. The admissions staff does NOT consider that piece of information when deciding if you’re admitted to the university as a whole.
THEN and only when you’ve been chosen for acceptance to the university, will those applicants with a declared LEP major have their entire packet forwarded to the LEP reviewers.
Major blind means they cannot manipulate the numbers in any given major, EXCEPT the LEP ones.

We don’t understand letters and sciences option, what does it mean, Can my kid do something related to computers like Information systems, Computer engineering. How hard it is to major in computers if not computer science which we understand is LEP. Is there a place to see what can he major in under L&S

Letters and Sciences is not a major. It is where students that are not directly admitted to a major are placed. Students could also choose L&S if they are just undecided so far.
Students can move from L&S directly to majors that are not LEPs. To move to LEPs they must meet the gateway requirements for the particular major. For Business and CS majors the gateway requirements alone don’t guarantee a student a spot. For these two programs there are more limited spots and those spots are competitive.
UMD has a list of majors that are LEPs.

If he wants to study computer science, there’s a million schools.
Surely he can do that elsewhere vs potentially doing something tangential but not CS.
Major, in my opinion, should trump school.

hi! in the same boat. i emailed UMD after getting rejected for CS LEP but accepted to L&S and they are reconsidering my application for CoE LEP (harder but still computing related)! have your kid reach out to UMD if that’s something he’s interested in

Nope, only AFTER admission overall - and even then, only if the student applied to an LEP.

Well, we found out why our S24 hadn’t received an admission decision. As it turns out, he was missing the transcript from the one random and inconsequential career exploratory class he took at the junior college during the summer between the 8th and 9th grade, so his application was “incomplete”. Mind you, in his portal, his application was marked “Complete” and there was no indication that any information was missing. The only way we found out was that we contacted the Office of Admissions to find out why he hadn’t received a decision and they emailed him telling him that his application was incomplete and that he hadn’t submitted the transcript (it would’ve been nice if they had told him that when they sent out decisions). To make matters worse, the email did not give any information on HOW to submit the missing information, even though it said he needed to submit it. Because his application is marked “complete” in the portal, there isn’t any noticeable way to add additional materials to his “completed” application.
So now I’m going to have to call the Admissions office on Monday to find out how to submmit the missing transcript. Given that we are OOS, I’m almost inclined to say “forget about it”. But we paid the application fee, so we might as well see it through.
This relationship is not off to a good start.

Sorry to hear. That does stink. Hopefully they can evaluate you as an Nov 1 admission as it does make a difference.

Son was accepted EA into L&S, but had applied for CS.
Is it possible to forfeit this to go into the RD pool for CS?
Otherwise, UMD is out, he would not go unless direct admit to CS. Already in at other very good schools, but UMD is clearly a great program.
