University of Maryland (UMD) College Park Early Action 2024

@ElenaParent - I came across the following UMD link and it does state in one of the questions that additional LORs may be submitted

https://www.admissions.umd.edu/apply/application-faqs/freshman-application-faqs

Hey! I am applying early action to the University of Maryland!

I have a 3.94 unweighted GPA and a 4.64 weighted GPA. I primarily took honors and AP classes. I took 1 AP in my sophomore year, three APs in my junior year (one of them a double-period), and am in 3 APs this year. I am also part of the PLTW Biomedical Sciences pathway program at my school. I took the SAT three times, and my highest score was a 1360 (680 on both sections). I want to major in bioengineering on the pre-med track. Based on my GPA, courses, and SAT score, what are my chances of getting into UMD?

I am excluding my extracurriculars for now because I need to do homework!! Haha!!

@taosif I think you have a solid chance

Hi, I’m applying for Early Action for Aerospace Engineering OOS.

My school doesn’t provide a GPA but would be an unweighted 3.4. I have a 35 super scored ACT. I have 5’s on AP Calculus BC, Physics Mechanics, E&M, Statistics and a 4 on Environmental Science. I have 800 on SAT Math 2 and Physics. I have a lot of extracurriculars, mostly career-oriented and clubs. I have an intern at Seoul National University’s Aerospace Engineering Lab and worked as a translator at a Tech Company. My weak spot is the 3.4 GPA. What are my chances? Thanks

Does the application have to be complete to be considered EA? My son’s school said it sent his transcript and counselor letter but the coalition does not say received.

@stemkid Colleges want students to submit on time but typically give a bit of leeway for the rest (trancripts, letters) to come in.

UMD-CP EA-application status question: DS20 submitted the app through coalition-app ; teachers sent the recommendations on time - thorough coalition-app. The status checklist reports these things correctly.

But the hs school sent transcripts/school-report directly through regular mail in early Oct; and CB sent the SAT scores directly in early Oct. The checklist on coalition-app says these are not yet received. wondering is it the update/sync issue or he has to do something. Anyone else in the same situation?
Thanks.

Yes, we’re in a similar situation. DD has all the pieces of the application received on or before 10/31, the application submitted date is 10/29, but the application complete date is 11/2. Does that mean she missed the EA deadline?

@baseballMomof3, based on your information, all of the materials were in by the deadline. The 11/2 date may likely be when UMD marked the application as complete, but to confirm, have your DD call Admissions to confirm. I’d say you met the deadline. Good luck!

What criteria does Maryland use during the EA process… i know some schools use strictly grades, rigor and test while others still use the holistic process or some variation of it

UMD uses a holistic process as stated in the following link

https://www.admissions.umd.edu/apply/admission-review-factors-and-process

@SoofDad but this says for admissions… i am talking about early action only

@jhmoney - UMD uses the same criteria for both early action and regular decisions.

UMD actually gets more EA applications and RD applications.

Each year, most of the Freshman class is filled by EA applicants

good luck !

Hey guys,

I applied to UMD early action this year. I had a 1500 SAT, 3,99 unweighted GPA (13 APS), class rank (top 3%, 8 of around 300). I was captain of my sci oly team, class treasurer, secretary of math club, varsity sport, and have had some research/internship experience. What is my shot for the honors college, I really love UMD and would love to attend. OOS btw.

@PurpleLlama066 your credentials look almost just like mine. I’m in the honors college this year, I’m almost positive you’ll get into the honors college

@sliu412

Great! Thank you so much,

My son applied to UMD for Early Action and just curious as to what you guys think if he will get accepted.
OOS(NY)

GPA: 95.2 (Advanced Regents Diploma) Weighted not sure on a weighted scale but it is around a 4.0 i believe on a conversion
Rank: 74/302 (25%)
3 Letters of Rec: 1 Counselor, 1 AP Biology Teacher, 1 English teacher
Activities: Volleyball Junior varsity & Varsity (Captain in sophomore year, received MVP AWARD, and went to playoffs in Varsity season)
Lacrosse varsity player
Volunteer at Winthrop University NYU Hospital(stated hours and how long worked, but the site did not save the other information regarding his exact role)
Volunteer at Hofstra University summer camp ( Reach Program) ( also stated hours but information regarding specific role is not included)
My son had not explained the activities in the space they provided he only listed what he did and for how long.
Does the activity section seem like a weak part of his application? Is his SAT score low? and what are his chances of getting in for the 2020 fall admission

@KPat10 This is just my opinion, but I think your son seems like a well-rounded student from what you listed above. If you look at the Common Data Set (tab CDS-C)for the University of Maryland, you can see where your son’s SAT falls among their admitted students from 2018. https://www.irpa.umd.edu/InstitutionalData/cds.html

It looks like 93% of their Admitted Freshman were in the top 25% of their class, as your son, but his SAT score is in the lower range. His activities and GPA are impressive, and to me, they speak more about what a well-rounded person he is than an SAT score.

Stay optimistic, and good luck!

@H0llyw00d do you think he will get still accepted with that low sat score? I have known kids that have gotten in the year before with scores that are in 1270 or 1260. Also just side information is having a few grammar mistakes in the essay ok?
