University of Maryland (UMD) College Park Early Action 2024

It doesn’t say they will release decisions ON Feb 1. It says decisions will be released BY Feb 1, which implies that the decisions could be released sooner. Regardless, it would be very simple for UMD to put a message on a blog or on Twitter/IG this week saying the decisions will be release after the close of business on Jan 31 or will be released at x time on Feb 1. That’s all it would take for people to stop speculating.

I said they stated they would release by Feb 1. You will get an email when they release you guys are really making a big deal out of nothing. For the past few years (ever since Coalition) it has been last Friday of Jan at 5:00. If it’s not out by then, you have every right to be upset at Maryland. But, they have done nothing wrong at this point.

I take your point and don’t want to make a bigger deal out of this than it is. However, if you compare UMD to the way UVA has handled the exact same situation and how transparent and communicative UVA’s Dean of Admissions has been, you will see the point I am trying to make.

How does that happen? The checklist has dates received next to each item. If everything is marked as received by the deadline, how can it be incomplete?

Think the issue people have is that decisions are clearly ready (and some people already received theirs). So either release them or come out and say decisions will be released on X day at X time, not some vague BY date. It’s really not that difficult!

They could be more transparent, however, that isn’t an indication they don’t care abt you. I understand UVA does that, but many many schools do not. UVA is an exception instead of a rule.

Let me be clear that I do not think UMD is doing anything wrong in the sense that they are not fulfilling a commitment. In the truest since they have not gone against what they’ve said that would do. I think what we are referring to is customer service. We are making comparisons to what other school do to assist in the anxiety of waiting. I don’t think anyone’s asking for a earlier early decisions but we are asking for improved customer service around this process. If this process doesn’t bother some folk then that’s great. But for those of us that would just like some re assuring information then I thinks it’s fair to express that.

@401mystatesucks i dont mean to poopoo UMD because i mean i still really like it, its just frustrating because we aren’t asking for much, just for them to be a little transparent with us, and if im gonna be spending $32,000 a year and spend the next 4 years at this place i feel like thats not too much to ask

I agree with you that it is taking it a bit too far to say UMD’s sub par transparency is indicative of a lack of care or concern for students. I would not say that.

I have to agree with everyone on all of these points. Yes, they still technically have 24 hours to release decisions. But, this is a very stressful and anxiety-inducing process for students (and parents!). Although my child did not apply to UVA, I applaud them for their transparency. My child did apply to Univ of Illinois. They sent an email one month in advance with the exact date and time for release and I found this to be so thoughtful and respectful of the student’s feelings. They did the same for students applying regular decision. Many other schools carry on the same as Maryland–but, they certainly don’t have to. Clearly, decisions were made well in advance given the fanfare of the Terp bus. A solid release date would be kind. Good luck everyone!

Will there be a bus coming to my house tonight to get me if I get in? I’m in New Jersey.

The anxiety & speculation levels went into over drive after the Terp Bus event last Saturday as many expected (granted incorrectly) that the notifications would come shortly after the event. All UMD admissions needed to state in their post on Twitter, Instagram, etc. of the event was that the notification for the remaining applicants, for example, would occur on 1/31 or 2/1 by 5 pm est. Is that so difficult? It would have alleviated a lot of stress. Is it wrong to expect a better process? I don’t think so…

To all prospective parents and students who have joined me on this thread for the past week, it has been a pleasure. From ravenrob to beefstew2 to stressedmom2 and even all the way over to junemomma68, I will remember every memory we made here on college confidential. There is nothing I enjoy more than spending my time reading your helpful and reassuring comments on this page. I hope to spend time with your great children next year. It breaks my heart that some of us may not be admitted. So I wish you the best of luck today, whenever the time may be. I must however, refrain from wishing you too much luck:wink:  .
Love, nervousTeen1234

Good luck to everyone!!!

For all of those that are wishing for transparency, you/your kids must not have applied to Wisconsin - a few hours before the deadline to release they sent an email that it would be over the next 10 days. This was a few days before Christmas and a day after Michigan EA which was ridic on these boards. We create this drama ourselves by lurking on these forums. And I am just as guilty. Sit back and find a way to enjoy the process and your own/your kids achievements.

@sunkissedskidoo I’m totally with you on Illinois. They do a fantastic job communicating. My daughter was deferred and even after that they were thoughtful enough to send us the date and time when she will receive her decision. Even if she doesn’t get in I will leave the experience with my highest regard for them. I wish all schools were so organized and transparent. Good luck with UMD and college overall!

I hear people about the admissions process, but nothing was as agonizing as OSU. We still love it, but boy, do they make the kids sweat it out. No dates, multiple waves sent out over the course of 6 hours each wave, many Friday nights spent refreshing and refreshing the portal to no avail. It all worked out in the end, but that experience makes this feel like a relief comparatively. ?

why has the checklist button not dissapeared

@nervousTeen1234 It has been a pleasure to be of assistance to all who asked questions and had comments. @SoofDad has been quite a wonderful resource in this process too.

I am hoping for good news for my son whose scores/grades sit right smack dab in the middle of last year’s accepted student profile. We are hoping for good news very soon.

I wish everyone the best in the process and reach for your dreams in your Post-HS life!!!

We were told by two different area school counselors who contacted UMD directly that the release day would be Feb 1. Would love if it came out today instead, but regardless good luck to all patiently waiting
