My son applied for Computer Science but has been given option in Letter and Sciences school.
The decision letter indicates
Major: Letters and Sciences (4901T)
What does 4901T means?
Also, if he completes the gateway requirements for Comp Science, is it guaranteed that he will get CS major or it depends on seat availability in the CS major at that time?
It is really horrid that some people have ācompleteā on their Coalition App and yet Maryland is actually missing some information. This is terrible customer service. Would Maryland prefer that every single applicant personally call the office to double-check? Isnāt that the problem that portals are supposed to solve?
Luckily, this problem didnāt occur in my family, but my heart goes out to those who have received misinformation.
How do you know if you got into the Smith School of Business? At the bottom of the acceptance letter it says major : Accounting and Advising college : Smith School of Business. It doesnāt say anything else in the body of the letter? Do I assume she got in ?
@joebar FIRE sounds like an excellent program. My DD got into Honors, which Iām happy about because of the scholarship potential, but if she had gotten into FIRE, I would have been very happy, too. FIRE students get trained and mentored in research, working as a team. Look it up! Youāll be pleased.
@ImStillDre Iām really sorry that you didnāt get in. You mentioned that you are from in-state. Do you live in Montgomery or Howard Counties by any chance? Admission is more competitive coming from these counties, because they already send so many students to UMD. Do you come from a high school that sends a large number of students every year to UMD? That can also be a challenge. Also, you mentioned somewhere that your first choice was Comp Sci and your second choice Engineering. Those are two very competitive programs. Iāve noticed so many people interested in Comp Sci here on this board. UMD, in order to have a comprehensive university, needs to accept people who are truly interested in other majors. Otherwise, it would turn into MIT! I would accept the offer at UMBC or your other best option. If you donāt enjoy it after a year, apply for a transfer! Thereās nothing wrong with you; you simply indicated interest in overly popular programs. You may want to take a look at U Alabama Huntsville. They give crazy merit to out-of-staters there. Itās also right next to NASA.
@account5275 College Park Scholars is an honor, but not Honors. Hope that makes sense. At UMD, the Honors committee gets first pick of students; the Scholars committee gets second pick. From College Confidential, I have seen students with very high stats get admitted to each of these communities. It seems that the CS majors really get spread out; in other words, UMD doesnāt want the Honors community to be entirely filled with CS kids! I canāt remember if you are CS or not, but I see a lot of CS hopefuls on this board getting disappointing results, even those with high stats. Iāve heard very good things about the Scholars program.
@jhmoney The official tiered system seems to be that the Honors committee gets the first pick of students, then the Scholars committee gets the next pick of students. Carillon and FIRE are next, but Iām not sure what the order is. FIRE seems to pick a lot of students from underrepresented groups, but not exclusively. I think that all of the programs are great opportunities. Some students donāt get picked for anything. All students are eligible to apply for departmental honors later in their college career. The selection of the different communities is holistic. For instance, I am seeing on these threads some kids with 1500ās who were selected for Scholars or Carillon and some kids with 1400ās who were selected for Honors.
Only Honors students are eligible for B-K scholarships. Honors and Scholars are eligible for Deans and Presidential scholarships according to a previous poster, so not an offical source. Only in-state students can get a Deans scholarship.
@ImStillDre Okay, I think we have identified that coming from your competitive high school may very well be your challenge. UMD gets a ton of kids from Howard County. Kids in Montgomery County, especially those coming from Whitman, Blair, and Richard Montgomery, among others, are competing against all of their classmates. My DD comes from a high school that sends only 40% of students to 4 year colleges. The kids with good stats automatically get into UMD. I donāt see many surprises.
My D20 is in for Information Science! And offered College Park Scholars! Super excited for her and very thankful.

My son is a sophomore and he is a CS major who is in University Honors and was in Fire as well. He originally wasnāt offered the FIRE program but if you are in UH they may send you an email at a later date to join FIRE. I realize you are in FIRE already but that was just for other people who may be reading. As an UH student he was able to take FIRE 100H (the honors section of FIRE 100) which essentially gave him both Honors credit and FIRE credit so it was a no brainer. He said it was easy and if he put in an hour a week it would have been a lot. The second semester he chose the Capital One Stream. That required 6 hours a week in the lab. The lab is open M-F from 8-5 so he would put in an hour here and an hour there. Nothing on the weekends. Depending on your schedule it may not be so easy to just put in 2-3 hours at a time. He said he learned next to nothing, the professor was not good, not willing to help and essentially said to google the answer quite often. My son hated it so much he decided to drop out of the program and not do the third semester. This is a kid who is motivated and after 33 credits his freshman year had a 4.0 and pledged a fraternity second semester.
A few other things. The program coordinators must have been aware of the professor (Tu or To if I recall). It seems many kids complained about the professor and my son got multiple emails asking him to reconsider and enroll in the third semester and that they had spoken to the professor. There was even an email from the professor acknowledging his short comings and how he was going to change things going forward. He was obviously aware of what his students thought. To that extent I commend the program coordinators for listening to the students and acting on their complaints. Also they had a problem getting enough people to apply for the summer fellowship that after he applied they changed the format to allow for two different time commitments with two different stipends. I assume they did this because of numbers.
With that said, he does have an internship with M&T Bank this summer (after sophomore year) which he believes that having the FIRE Capital One Machine Learning class on his transcript and resume probably could have opened the door for him. He said it came up in interviews with multiple companies. His grades obviously helped as well.
I can only speak for the Capital One stream he took. You donāt pick the stream until registering for the second semester. Depending on when you register there is a possibility that you wonāt get your first choice stream. At the end of the day it is about the stream you choose. The first semester you take FIRE 100 which will be an easy A and it will count as a Gen Ed and help your GPA. You just need to figure out during that first semester what stream you really want. It doesnāt have to be related to CS although Capital One seems like the obvious choice for a CS major. Iām sure people love FIRE but it just didnāt work out for my son.
My child was admitted into School of Enigneering and offered Global Communities LLC. I have a lot of questions - I know itās away from where the freshmen live and afraid heād feel isolated. Would it better from him just to live with the rest of freshmen? Also, I know thatās where VICTUS participants would live. What are the chances to self-nominate into Scholars or VICTUS. Is it even possible? What are the chances and the process?
@Quercusalba One qualification for getting in state tuition has something to do with filing a MD state tax return. I have no idea how they monitor this but know that it is possible to be denied in state tuition based on this and couple other distinct qualifications. Hopefully you will be able to correct it tomorrow by phone. They are excellent about getting you an answer. Not so excellent about changing classification if it was based on cetain criteria other than a mistake.
can somebody who was able to register for the admitted students open house give some advice as to how they did so? every time i log in with my ID and when I use the multi-factor authentication, the screen pops up with an error message. any ideas?
@lorifitzbac@user_367274 - @Jerzyboyz2 posted that he was able to sign up for Admitted Students Day. Maybe he can help. Someone else posted they were able to sign up also. but I canāt find who it was right now
That happened to us too and we went back the next day and it worked fine. My guess is that the system is overloaded so maybe pick on off time to do it. I tried on Friday night and got error message but at 9 am Saturday it went through fine.
