My son was accepted on Friday. I have been trying to sign up for housing and it is not allowing me. Is anyone else having this problem.
@dawgsout - Did he create his Directory ID and set MFA?
Filling out the Housing Form is NOT binding and it does NOT require any kind of deposit.
It simply lets ResLife know that you want to live on campus.
Freshman Housing is NOT first-come, first-serve.
Freshmen do NOT get to pick the dorm that they want.
Dorms are assigned based on LLCs, or assigned randomly if the student is not in any LLC.
Freshman can request a specific dorm, but it may not be honored unless there is a valid (i.e. medical) reason.
Freshmen can request each other as roommates.
Submitting the Housing form early May be beneficial when it comes to room assignments.
Hello, my son lives in another state and has been accepted to UMD as an out of state applicant. However, as a federal government employee working in MD, I have been paying MD state income tax for the last several years and plan to reside in MD for the foreseeable future (10+ years). How can we make a compelling case that he should be considered as in-state student?
@DeMaRo - Here is the policy,
Does anyone know where to find other scholarships that arenāt just merit-based?
is anyone else not able to submit their form for the scholars program? I submitted it twice and they still havenāt received it.
Has anyone heard anything about BK?
My son submitted his with no problem and got an automatic reply, so hopefully yours worked today. Congrats on Scholars.
I am curious about when BK Scholar interviews will be sent out. We are relatively new to Maryland, and I am so glad it has a strong flagship public university.
@FoF5o5 see post #1044

Financial Aid Notifications - All candidates for merit scholarships will be notified by March 1 and all final awards are made no later than April 1. Need-based financial aid will be offered no later than March 1 for students who submitted their FAFSA by January 1. #NowATerp #UMD2024ā
Congrats and welcome to UMD.
@FoF5o5 In the past Banneker Key interview invitations came out before all other merit and financial aid. The invitation usually arrives within 2-3 weeks of acceptance. This year UMD is stating all other aid (Presidents, Deans, grants and financial assistance) will arrive by March 1. I think that is earlier than previous years.
So frustrating. Weāve been Maryland residents for nearly 7 years and have owned our house since July 2014. We live in an incorporated municipality and donāt get mail delivery to our house. My kid therefore included both the street address and the PO Box for our town post office on his application, and UMD classified him as out-of-state as a result of including the PO Box. Iāve sent in copies of our deed and our property search result in the county database with no response so far. Iām worried that he will be out of the running for in-state merit aid as a result and have read horror stories online of how many months it can take to correct a mistaken residency determination. Itās so frustrating that he might not be considered for in-state merit aid because of UMDās mistake!
What is the criteria for Merit scholarships? Anybody heard about scholarships? What is the average award?
@FRDad - There is no published criteris for Merit scholarships. Amounts range from $1.500/year {Deanās Scholarships) to Full Ride (Full B/K Scholarships).
@Quercusalba ask your state delegates or senator to inquire on your behalf about your residency error.
At what point would you suggest I go that route? The person I spoke to on the phone said it would take 5-7 business days (from Monday when I sent the documents in).
Contact my delegate/senator now or wait until next Monday?
@Quercusalba I would wait til next week.
If UMD staff can correct it, I would send a glowing letter praising UMDās ________ staff personās quick response and copy their supervisor, department, etc.
Your delegate would not want every student in your location to be considered out- of- state and would be eager to learn how UMD will prevent such an error going forward.
My D was accepted into a Nutrition major. Waiting to see if she gets into the Nursing Pathways Program. The letters says she is invited into the Carillon Communities. First can someone tell me what this means and is it mandatory ? The letter and website does a poor job of explaining it. Thanks for the help
Gosh, I feel my OOS son is the only accepted student that didnāt get anything special at all, lol! He did get admitted directly into engineering which is awesome, but no Honors, Scholars, LLC, etc.
