@carrottopcurls2 Your son is not alone! Our D also OOS and accepted to engineering but nothing additional in terms of Honors, Scholars, LLC etc… We wait and see on merit scholarships to see if UMD will be in the running but not holding our breath! Fully expecting UMD to be priced out compared to other top options. We’ll see.
@carrottopcurls @stepl100 Be “feerless” . Many of these programs can be applied to after acceptance. Go to http://reslife.umd.edu/llp/ and explore the programs that you are interested in. UMD will rarely exclude anyone that desires to excel. Most importantly get great grades first year.
Search:
Department Honors
Scholars self nomination
Civicus self nominating
etc.
Read about the programs, go for the one you think you will thrive in
Current UMD Students
Current students at the University of Maryland who are interested in applying to the Honors College have several options.
First-year students
Current students who have completed one year of coursework at the University of Maryland can apply to join the Honors College. Admission for current UMD students is highly competitive and the number of spaces available is extremely limited. A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 is required to apply.
First-year students enrolled in College Park Scholars, CIVICUS, and Global Communities are eligible to apply to the Honors College. If admitted, students must withdraw from those programs to join the Honors College. Fall 2019 First-year students enrolled in FIRE are eligible to apply to the Honors College and may be members of University Honors and FIRE at the same time.
I have been reluctant to post the above after reading so many stories of people wanting to get into the Honors program because I think it is extremely difficult to transfer in. I think the only openings would come fron students dropping out. If your grades meet the mark after first year, go for it. But if you are in a program that you love, don’t throw away a year of that program to start over on Honors. You can always enter Department Honors junior year and take honors classes.
It seems pretty random to me for the LLCs. My son got Carillon but I don’t think any of the sub programs under it match is interest or personality
@stepl100 Thanks for not letting us feel so alone! lol! We are too in the same boat regarding finances and waiting to see if UMD can be on the list at all. Seems like other schools that he got into are the same. He got into them, but without having almost perfect ACT/SAT scores, there is no merit at all, despite having an excellent GPA and EC’s. And for us, we just cross over the financial aid line and get zero. Oh well. Luckily our state school Penn State which has an excellent engineering program. We just wanted him to have some options and the opportunity to live outside of PA.
I apologize for have a pity party for ourselves, lol! We knew what we were getting into. We did the NPC before we visited schools and did tell our son that we might not be able to afford it. And we also knew these were top engineering schools and his chances for merit could be slim. If he wanted to have greater chances of having a potential for more merit, he needed to look at other schools where his stats would be at the very top. Those that receive merit do so because they earned it and are exceptional. My son’s were stong enough to get accepted, so they are outstanding, just not exceptional. So excuse my little rant. We will continue to hold on to see how things play out, but will be realistic and understanding of the process.
Does anyone know if UMD send like an acceptance packet in the mail?
@SeptaUnella , the letter is as below.
Next Steps for You and Your Admitted Student
Dear XXX,
Greetings from the University of Maryland (UMD)! Congratulations to you and your family on the many academic achievements of your student. Admission to UMD is very competitive and it is important to celebrate that fact that your student stood out among over 31,000 strong applicants. We invite you and your student to come celebrate with us on campus at one of our Admitted Student Open Houses this spring! Registration is required.
Having experienced the college admission process with my daughters, I know how important the role of family and friends is in guiding students through the next few months. You will likely have many questions. We are here to assist and support you throughout the remainder of the college decision process and as you begin learning how to manage the cost of higher education. We hope you find the information in this newsletter helpful as you and your family navigate these next steps.
Sincerely,
Shannon Gundy
Executive Director, Undergraduate AdmissionsEnrollment Confirmation Deadlines
Fall admitted students have until May 1, 2020, and spring admitted students have until November 15, 2020, to confirm their enrollment at UMD. However, all admitted students must apply for on-campus housing by May 1, 2020. We encourage students to review the Admitted Student Checklists for additional steps needed to join the next class of Terps.Terp Parents: All the Resources You Need in One Place
The Office of Parent and Family Affairs provides parents and family members an opportunity to play an active, supporting role in the education of their student. Their website is designed to be your main source of information with helpful resources, services and articles.Understanding Your Investment
College is a major investment, which is why UMD offers an array of financial aid programs as part of our commitment to making an excellent education affordable. To help you get started, we recommend reviewing the estimated cost of attendance and learning more about the different types of aid:
Scholarships & Grants provide funding that you don’t need to pay back and are offered based on financial need and/or academic achievements.
The Federal Work-Study program at UMD is designed to assist students in meeting their educational and living expenses through part-time employment. Qualifying positions can be found both on- and off-campus.
Loans are borrowed funds that must be repaid after graduation. The only application needed to be considered for Federal Loans is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).Financial Aid Notifications Financing an Education at UMD
All candidates for merit scholarships will be notified by March 1 and all final awards will be made no later than April 1. Need-based aid will be offered no later than March 1. When it is available, students can view the status of any of their aid and/or offers in the Student Financial Aid Portal. While there is plenty of time before any payment is due, it’s important to understand your options. The Terp Payment Plan allows you to spread out payments into manageable monthly installments.
As a parent of an accepted student, I did not receive the above email. When/how would they send this to us? I am curious as I am afraid that they don’t have my email address for important information that pertains to parents of accepted students.
Any help would be appreciated.
It came to my daughter’s email address. Did you check there?
My son feels the same way. I’m encouraging him to choose the ones that he doesn’t mind. I would be interested to know advantages/disadvantages to Carillon Communities vs. not participating.
I am also interested in more info on the Carillon Communities. And how students were selected for them. At first glance it doesn’t appear that any of them are really a fit for my son’s personality and interests. But more information would be helpful in making that determination.
Did anybody receive BK scholarship this morning on coalition?
Apparently they did. There is another thread on that topic
Has anyone who has been accepted to Carillon gotten a merit scholarship? Looking through this thread it sounds like Honors, and then Scholars are provided scholarships first.
@FRDad - Except for the B/K scholarships, the timing other scholarships is not related to being in Honors or Scholars, or any particular LLC.
The B/K invites come out first because they involve an on campus interview
Does anyone know anything about Global Communities?
@Ravenrob I found it in my spam folder. Check there.
What is Carillon Communities??!! Is it a dorm?
@Guammom671 Thank you for the tip about checking the Spam folder.
