University of Maryland (UMD) College Park Early Action 2024

Not really but they do say the largest Presidents award for In State is $5,000 and OOS is $12,500. But if the applicant pool for OOS is tougher the same scores may not reach the max. We will drive ourselves nuts trying to speculate. Applications dropped a tiny bit from 2017 to 2018 and again to 2019 so you think it would be a little easier to get in but not so. We know a lot of very good students who were shocked not to get in and more than half of accepted students we know got Freshman Connection last year. It seem the applicant pool although not increasing is scoring higher and higher (especially WGPA).

Avg High School Acad GPA 2017 4.26 2018 4.28 2019 4.32 it says GPA but really must be Wgpa.

@FRDad My OOS daughter got the max Presidential $12,500/yr last year her stats (She is in Honors College):
GPA UW 3.969; W 4.969
SAT (Superscored) 1490
AP with Distinction

@mom517
Thanks for the info. My son has the same SAT score but his GPA is much lower. He did get Direct admit to Smith. He has great ECs (Eagle scout, Social Entrepreneur) though, but I think that is secondary. They care about SAT and GPA more. I don’t think he will get the full max. Let’s see what happens. Also UMD is costlier than some of the other Big 10 schools (Indiana, Ohio State)

Probably a lot of truth to this. My S20 is currently ranked first in his senior class and has the highest weighted GPA in his MD high school’s Naviance data, which I’m guessing is at least a decade old. Not something he pointed out or referred to in applications (he rolled his eyes when I mentioned it). He has certainly maxed himself out with the challenging classes offered by his school, but I’m guessing there are more than were available in previous years. Universities are said to recalculate the weighted GPAs (or place them in context for the high school), and UMD in particular knows the relative academic breadth and depth of MD high schools.

Is anyone going to the admitted students day this Friday, 28th? If so, I heard there’s an app but we haven’t received an email about it yet. Has anyone?

Does anybody know when Financial Aid info comes out?

I heard the last Friday in February from past years.

My Son’s financial aid portal shows the updated aid information. Doesn’t show any scholarships yet. “Federal unsubsidized loan” = 5,500, “Total for 2020-21” = 7,500 (incl loan). Any idea what this means? where is the additional 2k coming from?

Does anyone see similar information? Will the scholarships be added later
 or is this it? :frowning:

Our portal shows the information also. No scholarships, no grants, no other financial aid. But same confusing information: “Federal Unsubsidized Loan = $5,500” “Total for 2021 = $10,500” I am curious how the total of $5,500 + $0 = $10,500???

Maybe @ragingboy the $2,000 and @ir1852 the $5,000 IS a scholarship? Mine shows sub direct land & unsub direct loan for a total of $5,500. That’s it.

What portal are you looking at?

just got an email about presidents scholarship, i’m oos, only 8k over 4 years.

My daughter just received an e-mail as well. President’s Scholarship, $50k over 4 years.

I just received the email as well, 32k over 4 years (oos). @NoVaRat would you mind sharing your daughter’s stats for reference?

I got 50k over four years as well. Does anyone know when we will be able to see the full package/breakdown so we can see approx how much we would have to pay per year?

Major: CS (Honors College, accepted into ACES LLP)
GPA: 4.43 (W), 3.93 (UW) from a top public HS in the country
SAT: 1590 (800 Math, 790 Verbal)
OOS

Congrats! Some people here are already reporting seeing their financial aid on the financial aid portal. I don’t have access to my daughter’s login information and thus cannot personally verify.

Best breakdown for now is on portal. Not the easiest menu selection to get in.
Fin. Aid site first
then “see my award”
then sign in with Dir ID
then where it says you F A is approved or something like that in red
click top of page in gold FINANCIAL AID OFFER.
