University of Maryland (UMD) Early Action Class of 2030 Official Thread

Thank you! Will ask her to check. Perhaps separate timelines for scholars and honors sessions.

The Scholars program has a number of specialized programs from which to chose with a 2/26 deadline to select a program so perhaps that means a faster schedule.

Honors college has a list of honor colleges to choose from by 2/15. We have not looked at that yet. So probably should do that soon. Thanks for the information.

@M2026 Be aware that some of the Honors Programs (and Scholars Programs) have limited capacities due to the nature of program. For example, ACES can only accommodate about 80 new freshmen each year. The assignment to programs is NOT first come first serve. Many Honors College students end up in University Honors, which is the largest (and the original) Honors College Program

Thank you @SoofDad There’s a webinar on Monday where I’m hoping we’ll find out more.

My daughter’s also been accepted into Penn State, Rutgers and Wisconsin and only UMD has invited us into program that creates a small college out of a large one with all the benefits of a Big 10 college outside of a major city.

You can only go to one school. Congrats to her. Many schools will have sub opportunities if you look - leadership programs or living learning communities. Other (schools) are less competitive for Honors but these are four with high honors expectations.

As long as she finds one - a single school to fit her needs- it’s great!! It’s all you need.

Best of luck.

You list 3 preferences and they put you into one.

The Honors College Programs are a good diverse mix of opportunities. Each is a Living Learning Community {LLC} with an associated Dorm. For example, all the students in the ACES Honors Program are assigned to live in the Prince Frederick Dorm (a REALLY nice new Dorm}. There have been some students who did not care for any of the Honors Programs but they picked one because of the Dorm it was in. Once you start in an Honors Program there is no penalty if the student chooses to drop out. So, a student really cannot lose by at least starting in one of the Honors Programs, even if they are not sure they will like it.

My D liked her Honors Program (University Honors) but it was NOT a very nice Dorm (Hagerstown), so she moved to a nicer Dorm (Denton) beginning her Sophomore year and completed her Honors Program Citation requirements by the middle of that year.

Did UMD already sent out all scholarships or presidential one is still pending?

It seems like the B/K invites have gone out, but the Dean’s and Presidential s are probably in 2 weeks.

Only BK invitations have gone out. Other admissions-based scholarships go out all at once in mid-late Feb, site says by March 1.

All B/K invitations were came out?

They all went out at once a week ago, yes.

Do students that were not accepted to honors still have a chance for merit?

Absolutely Yes. I would even say that most of the students in the Honors College did not get scholarships.

It was years ago - my son got $5K and was given Scholars, not Honors. I don’t think UMD gives big merit though - outside BK. Per the 2025 CDS, 22% get merit, on average $8575 - although you don’t know the In vs. out of state split. Obviously, 22% of enrollees are not in Honors.

The Scholarship situation at UMD can be a bit tricky to figure out. Scholarships awarded to Admitted Students but the CDS only addresses Enrolled Students, and the CDS does not use the designations that UMD advertises (B/K, Presidents, and Deans).

UMD’s own postings indicate that about 150 (out of 400) B/K Awardees actually enroll and about 400 Deans Awardees enroll. The rest are presumably Presidents Scholarships awards of various amounts.

And given a very low OOS yield (a tad under 11%), they’re likely not generous - to the point that most people on this website excited for their acceptance will never actually enroll there. Nearly 9 of 10 OOS admittees won’t.
