thanks. when is merit typically awarded?
Regarding merit, I read conflicting points on this - only those admitted to Honors college are even eligible for merit and students such as those in Scholars program are not eligible. Is there any validity to that?
My daughter got a presidential scholarship with Scholars the year she applied.
I hope @SoofDad can confirm, but I thought within a week or two of now?
No. As @momofboiler1 said above, Scholars admits can receive merit and I know a few students who were neither in Honors or Scholars who received merit money.
But having said that, keep in mind that UMD doesnāt give much. Some students I know received $12k/year but most merit awards were $2-2.5k/year. Being an Honors or Scholars invitee is also no guarantee of merit aid.
In mid March, I believe.
Probably a few weeks. There is no specific date. I think UMD says āBy March 1ā
Absolutely No. The B/K scholarship is only available to students admitted to the Honors College . The Presidents Scholarship is available to ANY EA Admitted Student. The Deans Scholarship is only available to In-State EA Admitted Student.
UMD awards about 400 B/K scholarships. About 250 get the Full Ride and 150 get a partial amount. Only about 150 actually end up enrolling. I would guess that most of the students awarded the B/K also have Ivy League admissions. Also there are about 400 enrolled students with Deans Scholarships. I do not know how many Presidents Scholarships are awarded, but it is not a large number. Most of the students in Honors and Scholars do NOT have scholarships.
My DD admitted to CS with FIRE program. I see some of the kids got honors. Is there Honors available for CS program also. If yes, what is the difference between regular vs honors in CS ?
Not for freshmen, but if they are doing research during college, they can apply for departmental honors: https://undergrad.cs.umd.edu/honors/requirements
There is the Honors College, which a set of theme-based Living Learning Programs, which some students are selected to be part of.
Then there are Departmental Honors. These are Department i.e. Major based, Programs (such as CS). Each Department has its own criteria for admission and completion.
Typically, students can apply for Departmental Honors at the end of their Sophomore year/ beginning of their Junior Year.
Departmental Honors typically requires the student to prepare and defend an āOriginal Honors Thesisā before a panel of Department Professors. Usually only a small number of students are admitted to Departmental Honors. There is no Living Learning Community connected with Departmental Honors
It is possible for a thesis to be submitted for Professional Publication. Admission to Departmental Honors, includes automatic admission to the Honors College.
Samkumar, as another poster stated thatās not true. My son was admitted to honors, one of his friends to Carrilon and another to Fire. They received more merit pay than my son.
Regarding why some are placed in honors, there doesnāt seem to he any rhyme or reason. His grades were not better, I guess there was something in the short answer questions they liked. Heās a sophomore now enjoying his time at UMd and he told me some of his smartest classmates are not in an honors or scholars program. I suspect that some students from oos (like my son) are placed in these programs to entice them and get them to pay put of state tuition. Nevertheless UMd has been worth itā¦so far.
I see everybody post accepted to major with <>. At UMD is there regular admission or everybody has to be part of some LLC or Programs like FIRE/Honors?
Last Fall, UMD had 60,147 applications admitted 26,994 of them. The people posting on this forum is a significantly smaller number than 26,994. There are many, many students who just get admitted and nothing else.
No, as mentioned by SoofDad. But Iāve heard that about half of the freshman class are part of an LLC.
Is that right @STEMX?
Thanks @SoofDad and @DadOfJerseyGirl
Let me make a post so future admits donāt ask!
S25 admitted to CS with no added programs/LLCs.
Not sure for campus as a whole, but here is the info for CMNS: https://cmns.umd.edu/sites/default/files/undergrad/Freshman%20Graphic%20Fall%202024.pdf. More people who are offered special academic programs confirm enrollment than those who were not, so that does skew things.
If your student want not invited to any special academic programs such as Honors, College Park Scholars, FIRE, Carillon, etc. they can self-nominate for some of those: Resources for Invited Students | College Park Scholars, https://www.fire.umd.edu/join-applications, and Frequently Asked Questions | Carillon Communities
Does anyone know how admissions chooses what scholars program each person gets?
Nervous because only two fit my profile & interests and Iām super, super excited for them, and UMD is easily 1st choice if I get either of those.
