University of Massachusetts Amherst Early Action for Fall 2024 Admissions

UMass publishes detailed data on their website. You may find the information here that may be of relevance.

Thank you very much for the links. My D does not have high GPA but above average SAT, she will apply Regular Decision. Not sure if she has a chance since there are so many Early Action applicants already. U Mass Amherst seems like a “Reach” for her.

Did you look at the GPA stats specifically for the major she is applying to? And did you recalculate her GPA using the formula UMass uses? Her GPA might not be as low as you think (either with the recalculation or for her major).

Thank you for your post. You are right. I watched a you tube video on how U Mass Amerst recalculate the GPA. It turned out higher than what’s on her transcript and is within the range for what she is thinking of (Psychology). The AP classes she took helped. Hopefully she has a chance.

Where’s the video for recalculating Umass gpa?

In You Tube, look up “How does UMass recalculate GPAs of applicants?”

@sage33 and @MAmomto4 ,
Thank you for this. I assume they only take 3 years of FL. My D did multiple FL courses just to explore. I recalculated her GPA as per their standards but not sure exactly what all courses they consider but looks like she is little above 4.0 and is applying to College of Social and Behavioral Sciences college and their mean gpa is 3.91. Does that mean she has a chance?

I’d say she seems “in range.” It is hard to tell for sure, but it seems more like a target or match for her rather than a reach. (Kids don’t always get into their target or matches, though. :face_with_diagonal_mouth:)

Thank you! I totally agree. Hope she gets in. Good to know that it’s not a reach for her.

At least our daughters are not applying computer science which seems a lot more competitive!
I think they have a chance.

I applied into Hospitality Management in Isenberg as an in state student.
3.9 UW GPA
Test optional
Good ECs (most applicable one to the major is winning an international award in Hospitality Management in DECA)

Thoughts on my chances of getting in? I forgot I applied into Isenberg and just realized tonight, freaking out now😂

You have good stats and award.
Did you apply EA? We heard EA and In State students have higher chance.
We are OOS plus Regular Pool, my D is really worried.
But you never know, nowadays admission seems very unpredictable.
Good luck to you!

Yes I applied EA! Good luck to you as well, admissions is a total gamble sometimes - you never know!!

Does Umass defer a lot of OOS kids? I know Wisconsin and especially Michigan are notorious for postponing OOS and putting them in RD pool. Should we expect that, or is UMass pretty good about accepting or denying ea?

I think deferrals are rare, if any. They definitely waitlist a lot of students, especially for cs and business.

I just read through the 1200 post thread on early action from last year. Last year they said the only possibilities were: accept, deny, or waitlist. And that is what I saw in peoples comments about their decisions.

Thanks, did it seem there are a lot of oos waitlisted? And should oos take waitlist as no, or does it move? Trying to decide what our travel plans might be for Feb-April and not sure where Umass falls on this issue.

Lots of OOS waitlisted for business and comp sci. Not sure about the others.

Last year there were tons of waitlist for CS and business, both out of state and in-state. There were also waitlists for other majors, I don’t know if it was fewer because fewer people applied overall for those majors, or because of something else.

The most recent CDS 22-23 showed 8500 people offered spots on the waitlist, 3700 accepting the spots, and 74 admitted from the waitlist. There is no breakdown by major.

The year before fewer people were offered waitlist spots, and many more (over 1000!) were accepted off the waitlist. But I think that was due to Covid so I wouldn’t put much stock in it. Also, there have been issues with over-enrollment the past few years, so I think it will be hard to predict how many people will get off the waitlist and how the school is managing enrollment.
