University of Miami class of 2022

@caveatesq ok, thx! Maybe our daughter’s will arrive tomorrow. I’m old-fashioned, I guess…doesn’t seem “real”
until it arrives in the mail

@Samsal Fall. I checked the mail once I got home today and the envelope was there

@mileyshaley5 why is being waitlisted better than being differed? I was waitlisted and thought it was the other way around but I’m curious to hear why you think that

I think being deferred is better than being waitlisted. If I understand it correctly, deferred applicants would go back in applicant pool and receive a decision when regular decisions are made. Then at that point they could be accepted, rejected or placed on the waitlist. Waitlisted now means applicant goes directly to waitlist, no chance during regular decision time.

If I do not have a message under financial aid does that mean I do not get any scholarships? I really thought I would. I have a 34 ACT 4.01 GPA, sports, extra carriculars, volunteer work, and a strong essay. I am just a little disappointed because many others seem to have gotten scholarships.

Differed means they didn’t like you, Waitlisted means they do like you…simple. And when u guys saw the acceptance rate for WL students you were probably shocked to see only 70 kids get accepted. However, Miami only offers admissions to WL students that they know will go to the school. Before they send an acceptance to a kid, they call or email to confirm that they would definitely attend the school. The WL stats are completely misleading.

WL isn’t a bad place to be. Trust the process…and stay lit.

I got my official UM acceptance package today! So happy right now… BTW i feel that differed is better than waitlisted (I got differed by Fordham) You have an automatic shot to get reviewed again, and get a solid answer. Getting waitlisted is too blurry, you can’t calculate the odds. There may be 200 kids in front of u.

@mileshaley5 Actually it’s the opposite. It’s better to be deferred than waitlisted. Waitlist means your stats are not worthy of further consideration. Period. Only if their yield prediction is way off will you have any chance of being taken off of the waitlist. Very few students are taken off of the waitlist each year. Sometimes none. But deferred means your stats are still competitive but they want to see how you stack up against the regular decision applicant pool. So you still can be admitted. Students that are deferred and not admitted are typically placed on the waitlist after all decisions have been rendered. Some schools that really like you will offer you spring 2019 admission or guaranteed transfer for sophomore year if you take certain courses and meet certain gpa criteria. All these options are better than waitlist, which is akin to a polite rejection.

@bulldoglover Yes, that means you didn’t get a scholarship. Many high stats students did not as well - some others and I talked a little bit about it a few pages back

@mileshaley5 agree that those stats are likely to be misleading… but just out of curiousity, were you waitlisted?

"If we waitlisted you, it means we really like you and you do not need to improve on your application. " - Miami website. Waitlisted apps are better than Differed apps.

unfortunately not. I also got in for spring 2019 and not fall 2018, so I called the admissions office and they told me there is no way I could go for fall instead of waiting until spring. The reason they gave me is that there are no available spots.

So there is no possibility I got one?

Does anyone know why they wouldn’t give students with high stats scholarships?

When do they release information about the full tuition scholarships

@bulldoglover All merit letters have been released, so no you did not get one. For full tution (like Stamps) I don’t know

@kingnelly27 I’m having the same problem as you. I called last week and asked for the guy to check my application status over the phone for me because I hadn’t yet received anything through canelink. He told me that he was sorry there was a delay but that I should get a notification through canelink within the next 2 weeks. I think I’m going to call back and make sure that my application was being considered for EA and not mistakenly for RD. Good to know I’m not the only person dealing with this.

Is there any platform/groupchat that the scholarship weekend invitees are connecting over?

Do you think UM calculates financial aid for the applicants during the application process? Or is it only once their sure of who’s going to be accepted?
I’m asking because in my to do list, they’re asking me to complete the CSS profile and submit some tax returns. I’m not sure if I should wait to see if I’m accepted first or do it as soon as possible.
