University of Miami class of 2022

I’ve seen some questions about the Coral Grant – this is need based determined year by year. So it depends on your FA needs each year.

@Steglitz90 when are candidates informed? So receiving this doesn’t rule me out for consideration?

got into school of business with president’s scholarship $30000 per year.

Son accepted 3.96w, 1400, Eagle Scout, $13k merit

1410 SAT, 4.45/4.02 gpa, Accepted to neuroscience with President’s Scholarship ($18k/yr)

I still have not received any notification of merit aid. Does this mean I will not get any?

@AD1433 We are wondering same. was hoping this morning, there would be an email in my son’s in box, but no such luck.

My daughter was accepted (biology) with $23,000 presidential scholarship. 35 ACT, GPA 4.6 from a top NJ high school. Several SAT subject tests 750+. Didn’t visit so demonstrated interest not a factor. Well-rounded with extracurriculars but nothing extraordinary.

Also a bit of info re. spring start option: my older daughter who applied to UM 5 years ago was offered the spring start back then so it’s not something new. They were offering a fall semester in Washington DC at that time. She considered it because she really liked UM (had applied ED) and talked with someone who did it the year before her and had a great experience. In the end, she chose NYU instead.

Can anyone open the letters on the message center? How many letters should there be? I’m trying to open mine but they’re not working

From the UM website

Merit-based scholarships range from $5,000 to full cost of attendance. UM awards merit-based scholarships to incoming undergraduate students based on their academic achievements regardless of their citizenship. The criteria for awarding scholarships are based on a comprehensive review of the applicant pool each year. There is no separate application required—applicants are automatically considered for an academic scholarship when they apply for admission to UM.

Was your merit award included in your financial aid eligibility letter or was it sent separately?

@awkwardambition This happened to my son as well. Try turning off pop up blockers in your browser. Or try another browser.

Daughter Accepted
President’s Scholarship (20k per year)
Major: Biomedical Engineering
GPA 4.8W
ACT 31
7 AP’s

If we haven’t received another message does that mean no merit aid?

Did they even reject anyone? It seems like people were accepted or waitlisted

@rohansoccer yes they did

My son was accepted for Fall 2018 yesterday but no merit aid letter. I spoke with a representative from the financial aid department today and sadly, he advised me that all merit aid letters should be in the message center by now.

33 ACT, 4.4W/3.95 UW 8 APs, honors classes, well-rounded extracurriculars and assuming good letters of rec. We never assumed anything but didn’t think he’d get completely shut out. Congrats to all who were awarded well-deserved scholarships.

I called as well. I am very disappointed as well. My son is National Merit Commended, National Hispanic Merit Scholar, first generation (dad born in Guatemala) 4.1 GPA, 34 ACT, interned at NOAA and applied to marine bio and got ZERO aid. He has great packages elsewhere. It’s really shocking because it would cost us close to $300k to send him there for four years.

I agree. We were really surprised and did get generous merit aid elsewhere. I’m told that merit aid is determined by admissions, not the financial aid department, so I’m surprised that they didn’t just defer or waitlist my son but we are chalking this up to “wasn’t meant to be.”

@camcam2022 From what I’ve read the major scholarship candidates have already been informed because candidates’ weekend is coming up this month.Sorry :frowning:
