University of Miami class of 2022

I think there is a theme that a bunch of ppl who didnt apply for aid havent gotten a scholarship yet. My guess is that those who didnt apply for aid are gonna receive their merit award later online or on their mail package

S did NOT apply for need based aid (we didn’t submit CSS or FAFSA), but did receive Merit aid.

@jackd341 I thought the same thing you did but just received a personal email from our regional rep confirming that merit decisions have all been posted and if we didn’t receive a message, then we wouldn’t be getting any merit $$. I’m still puzzled even after reading @Steglitz90’s really helpful post. My son did take mainly AP and honors classes, NHS, 360 Leader, ski team, and year round baseball on HS and club teams. Along with similarly situated posters, he’s clearly well above the top 25% of past years’ admitted freshmen–I guess the stars just didn’t align. We did not apply for need based aid but financial aid confirmed that you don’t need to file the FAFSA or CSS to qualify for merit aid. Just didn’t get any.

I’m reading about merit offer, what about need based? Are people receiving need based offers with their acceptance?
If not, When does the final offer come out?

Waitlisted WGPA 4.4 / 30 ACT OSS

Being waitlisted is 10x better than being differed

How so? @mileshaley5

My son was deferred - must be because his Frost audition in on 2/16

Annoying that the make them apply early action but can’t hear the decision until March

Students who are Waitlisted (EA/ED) are reviewed again just as deferred students are.

I called admissions and was told that if you do not receive merit letter you will not be receiving any. They do not reconsider it later. Congrats again to all.

being waitlisted EA/ED is very promising. Not so much for students waitlisted RD

@brutusmom Now that I think of it, my son’s merit package last year almost matched his FA need to the dollar. So maybe they distribute FA as merit instead or in lieu of FA. That ended up being one of the positives about the U – his aid was merit & therefore was stable & not going to fluctuate like need based aid (the old bait & switch, esp as I am self employed & my income goes up & down). Who the heck knows? The admissions “game” is like black jack – heavily stacked in favor of the house & while skill plays a part, most of it is luck.

@wendizub – not sure why he wasn’t admitted to the school he applied to, but it’s super easy to change schools once you’ve put your deposit down at the U (but before school starts). My son applied & was admitted as Poli Sci in A&S, but changed to Econ in the B school in May (after deposit). He literally sent them an email & voila! he was changed an hour later to the B school. So don’t panic!

How much price can you reasonably haggle to if you didn’t receive any financial aid?

Having been wait listed - no way we hold off to the outside notification date of June 23 for a decision as every other school applied to requires acceptance by early May.

@Nicetoknow1 my son received the Presidents scholarship for $20k a year. We did not ask for financial aid.

@A1A1A1 Many schools allow you to not attend even if you have put a deposit down if you get off the waitlist somewhere else

Regarding waitlist, someone just gave me some data (I wish that I could upload thew chart). Last year, there were about 8300 applicants who were waitlisted. Of those, some 2400 accepted a place on the waitlist. Ultimately, 70 were admitted. GOOD LUCK! If you go to the University of Miami Parent Connection Group on FB, you can see the chart.

Does anyone know if they sent out rejection letters yet?

@PCJazz I just happened to have the CDS open on my computer & that’s where the WL #s for last year can be found on p. 9. https://pira.miami.edu/_assets/pdf/Documents/CDS1718.pdf
