University of Miami Class of 2023

@hars5678 I did, very disheartening given I’ve already declined offer of admission bc I wasn’t given merit aid

What is HHMI

@BigHerms Howard Hughes Medical Institute. One of the biggest research foundations in the nation.

I did ea and got deffered so ? um I rlly thought I had a chance but I guess not ?

Has any international student received their FA package yet? I was accepted in EA but still haven’t received mine.
Completed by to-do list almost 2-3 weeks ago.

I was deferred EA with a 35 ACT and a 1560 SAT. I’ve been told it might be b/c UM assumed I would go elsewhere. All the other “elsewheres” have declined me. Any suggestions on how I might improve my chances? I’m genuinely interested in UM.

@SlimJim005 Have you sent a LOCI to your Admissions Officer? If you have any meritorious updates to include, that helps too. But just saying you are extremely interested in attending Miami can be helpful. Good luck! I know it’s stressful, but I am sure you will land somewhere amazing and thrive there.

when is RD supposed to come out?

Last year it was 3/22.

So back in early february I posted on here about attempting to appeal not getting any merit aid, and the VP of admissions FINALLY got back to me.

Here is his response:

Dear Noah,

Your inquiry is greatly appreciated. I took a closer look at your admission application file and regret to inform you that we are unable to offer you a merit award. Students are automatically considered for an academic scholarship when they apply for admission to the University of Miami. This year, the Admission Committee has seen a particularly competitive applicant pool, which, unfortunately, limits the amount of money we can provide to highly qualified students like you.

I fully understand and value your request for re-consideration. While I realize my response is not what you hoped for, please know that my admission colleagues and I think highly of you and know you will thrive at Miami should you choose to enroll for the fall term. If I can be of any further assistance, please let me know.

While I’ve already declined offer of admission to the school (no way I’m paying $71,000 a year when I have graduate school ahead of me) I hope if anyone tries to do the same, it turns out well for them. That said, I think this may raise a few ethics questions on UM’s merit scholarships. I cannot speak for everyone, but I feel they may evaluate for aid mostly on statistics and not holistically. (For reference I have a 32 ACT, 4.2 wgpa, and many $23k scholarship receivers had stats above this, and although I promise I’m not boasting, I am also a nationally ranked pianist and have spent over 500 hours of my last 2 years working as a hosptial intern) I was even offered invitation to apply to UM’s HHMI program and I called them back and said “give me aid then we’ll talk” LOL.

This is likely my final post on this thread, so best of luck to all of you and I hope we all end up doing amazing things!!

@noah2425 Just wondering…did you try to get a music scholarship? Don’t know if they only give them out to music majors, but with you being a nationally ranked pianist I would think they would want you to represent UM on some level within their music program and what better way to entice you than with $$$?!

@Propinquity4444 I looked at the Stamps music schoalrship, but it’s ensemble based once on campus and I’m not well versed in collaboration. Besides that, I had music scholarships I was pursuing at schools I would have chosen before UM

are we thinking this friday or next friday?

Let’s let’s pray for this Friday! In the past they said early to mid March so you never know

UM has Spring Break this week. So, is Admissions Office working? Would they release this week?

UM released last year on thursday the 22nd, which means it might be next thursday the 21st, first decision was reported at 11:51 am

@lesimpson4
Coincidentally, we’re going to Miami for spring break and have scheduled a campus visit for March 21st. D19 was deferred EA. But we also have D20 who will be looking for next year.

@noah2425 i’m literally in the same position. no merit. same stats. same research invitation. it sucks :frowning:

@noah2425 i got deferred from tulane so i’m hoping they’ll pull through with acceptance and merit in the RD pool for me.

are we thinking this thursday?
