University of Miami Class of 2023

@kforty2 and @kaibab3 - When we toured UCF on their NM weekend, Luke explained how it works. It basically wipes out the OOS status and qualifies all as in-state. So, the qualifying state schools are all covered for all students for full COA. When translating for Miami, it seems to pay whatever the highest state school COA is and you would subtract that from the Miami COA. Miami supposedly also gives $1000 or $2000 for NMFs, so that could be a little extra on top of the Presidential and Benacquisto. It’s not clear from what I saw on their website as to whether that is a yearly amount like most schools offer or a one-time amount.

It’s good to hear that Miami scholarships stack on top of that. That was my understanding, but it’s good to hear confirmation. Thanks!

@sloan4167 - I saw your question above. My daughter is a sophomore at UGA and was also accepted at UM and invited for the Singer weekend. They did it differently that year than they seem to have changed to for this year, so she went for an interview weekend along with 300 other students. She didn’t end up getting the Singer but was given an additional $4k/year on top of her Presidential offer as her consolation prize. Unfortunately, that was not enough for our budget.

If you have any questions about UGA, let me know. It’s a great school! My daughter loves it there and is in the Honors Program and is involved in lots of leadership and research opportunities. So, I’m happy to answer questions.

Thanks for the additional info @gamom2023! Do you happen to know when the deadine is to declare Miami as your NMF 1st choice? It seems all sponsoring schools have different deadlines.

I just spoke with someone in admissions office about merit aid. They said that they are behind in sending out all merit awards and claim that some are still going out today. My S was admitted - 36 ACT/3.97 UW GPA, lots of good ECS/leadership. We do not qualify for any financial aid so did not submit FAFSA. The two are separate - Financial aid and Merit. So we will just wait and hopefully find out something later today.

@sjlj01 and I was told the complete opposite. ? We will see. Good luck

My daughter was accepted.
OOS NJ
Sat 1340
3.9/4.45 gpa
Girl Scout gold award, congressional bronze medal award, VP NHS, Italian club president and lots of ECs
She also received the presidential scholarship of $20000
Of note, we DID Go and visit the school in person and did a tour .

Anyone holding out for premier or scholarship weekend, the director of admissions for my area said all went out already. She just emailed me.

@BigHerms and @sjlj01 I just spoke to someone in financial aid and to confirm called back and spoke to someone in admissions…they both indicated that merit scholarships would be mentioned in your original acceptance letter and also shown on the financial aid eligibility letter. Admissions also indicated that ALL merit scholarships have been sent already. :frowning:

@BigHerms @ProudDad13 crazy how the person I spoke to told me something totally different! I am very surprised my S got no merit at all. These admissions/merit decisions are puzzling for sure.

@sjlj01 @ProudDad13 it’s ridiculous that the offices can’t keep their answers homogeneous, it shouldn’t be that hard to have a well-informed financial aid/undergrad admissions office… When I called the woman told me it came with admissions and then after I was confused she U-turned and said it was a separate letter. Didn’t hear anything about it being delayed- but I really hope it’s true because I refuse to pay $70k a year

@ProudDad13 For what it’s worth, my son’s admission letter said nothing about any aid package at all. He received a separate letter regarding his merit aid offer (would not qualify for need based aid). I’m not sure if both letters appeared in the portal at the same time or if there was a time lag. It’s confusing that people are getting contradicting information from Miami staff!!

@kforty2 so did you actually get 3 letters…acceptance, FA eligibility that showed full price, and a separate merit letter?

Deferred

This was the order of my letters:
1- Admission Letter ( Accepted)
2- Cane Achievement Award (Scholarship)
3- Letter stating FA and my total cost of attendance.

Each arrived separately with about 10 minute intervals between them

Yes @ProudDad13. All 3, including the FA eligibility letter which broke down COA, including 20k President’s award & 3k loan offer. I’ve seen several posts here of people saying they were offered a 23k President’s offer, but I wonder if they are mistakedly confusing the 3k loan offer with merit. That said, I think the President’s award may go up quite a bit higher than just 20k, so maybe they are indeed posting correctly.

@sjlj01 keep me posted on this please

My son’s letter with the cost and breakdown included 23,000 presidential ; 14000 coral grant; 2000 UM endowment and then small offer of loans/work/study

Presidential can go to 28000, but only heard of 23,000 on here.

The presidential award goes up to 28k according to the website, although I haven’t seen anyone get above 23k. They are not including the 3k loan offer for the most part I assume.

Will someone please help me with this… I was deferred but was wondering if I could send a letter of rec through the mail?? is that allowed? someone plz say yes or no if i should!

@kforty2 - No, I don’t see any information about that anywhere. Since they don’t say differently, I assumed that it would just be based on the 5/1 commit date. But I really don’t know. That seems like a good question to ask directly to the school. You definitely don’t want to accidentally miss that deadline.

Oh, also, I saw your post about total for merit aid. My son got $23k for President’s. In addition, they showed $3k for loan, and $3k for work-based study (or something like that). They considered the complete package to be $29k of financial aid, but the President’s amount was $23k. I do know it varies, as my daughter got $25k President’s offer two years ago, and I heard that it went up to $28k. That year, some did get the $28k, from what I understand. I have no idea what it’s based on. I don’t think it would be just stats/grade. May also have to do with the program/major the student selected.
