University of Miami Class of 2023

@jdecker9 I’ve been hoping to see something about it. Trying to decide if we will go for the weekend in March. We can’t make the accepted students day so I was wondering if that weekend would be a good replacement.

@kaibab3 , last year was the first year of OOS Benacquisto so uncharted territory. Start with your regional admissions rep for confirmation.

When is the accepted students day?

if someone is accepted to um with the presidential scholarship and decide not to go, does that scholarship go to another student?

Do they also send snail mail?

it seems as if it is down to UGA or UM for my son. This is a little out of the box because it seems as if few boys from Dallas go to either of those choices…it is almost all UT or Ivy from here. He wants to do something different but it feels a little “lonely” for momma  because no one else from here is making this choice. We have visited both and liked both.

Does anyone know the past statistics or percentages of getting off the deferred list? Looks like UM is giving a lot less in merit scholarships this year.

@kaibab3, we confirmed with an admissions officer that OOS NMSF Benaquisto award can indeed be stacked on top of a Presidential scholarship.

Hi did anyone receive the premier scholarship weekend invitation? My son received an email at the end of December saying that he was a finalist for the premier scholarship and they asked him to send an additional essay. They said that they would send out invitations by the end of January. My son still hasn’t heard back so does that mean that he didn’t get it?

@asiancollegedad my son also did the essay. When I called, they said all of the invites were sent. There was a qualified applicant pool so many good candidates or something along those lines. They said they would only send the offers, they will not let people who didn’t receive it know. So, they said if he had been given one it would have been in his award letter.

I wish they would notify all candidates…these are young kids who just want a yes or no.

Oh okay, thank you. Yeah, I agree… They should definitely let all the applicants know so they know where they stand.

I agree, especially when it is a pre-filtered group of applicants.

@sloan4167 Both of those are great choices! I know what you mean, though about it feeling lonely. My son is looking at Miami, Dallas, Ft. Worth, and others not close to home. No one else around here that I know of is looking at those schools, so there’s no one to talk to about it here. Once your son decides, I imagine you’ll find others in your area that have students in those schools, though.

@jdecker9 From what I understand, the Foote Fellows get to move on campus early, first choice of campus housing, and register first for classes (which is huge because the best times/teachers fill quickly). There is probably more to it than that, but my S isn’t one and my D wasn’t invited into it (even with a Presidential Scholarship).

Does anyone know where I can find historical information regarding the number of deffered students actually getting accepted? Is it based on people rescinding the offer for spaces to open or is it based on the regular decisions too?

With my communications with my ao she said it’s fresh look at you and basically they look at the whole class admitted and stats and see what they are missing in their profile and so they compare you to the rd people and class as a whole. It’s nice if you have high or mid high stats and the rd is lower or average bc then you stand out among them but it’s really just hoping that the rd or the class is weaker basically. I don’t think they release deferral numbers but I didn’t ask.

Thank you @Freakingout23

Of course! All this makes me wish I would’ve ED:/ o well it’s a waiting game now

Waiting until l late March / early April will be torture :frowning:

@rtpstudent Did you happen to ask when NMF’s need to list Miami as their top choice school? Or if all NMF’s accepted to Miami are guaranteed to be awarded “scholar” standing by Miami (rather than just being a finalist)? This seems important since Benacquisto only applies to scholars, not just finalists. I’m hoping its’s an automatic designation at Miami, but at some schools it is competitive and not all accepted finalists are given scholar status/scholarship. I plan to ask admissions/financial aid myself, but it seems that throughout this process people have often been given different answers from Miami staff to the same questions so I’d like to try and compare and verify anwers. @vistajay Do you recall the answers to these questions from when your son was considering Miami?
Thanks!
