University of Miami Class of 2023

No, we did not ask that question.

i got deferred :frowning: SAT 1370 ACT 29, 3.98 UW 4.6 W (scale of 5) After this year i’ll have 10 APs and plenty of very strong EC. From Maryland, Hispanic female super duper sad

Do we have a specific date to expect deferred students to hear back?

@mea2023 deferred students receive their results on the same day as everyone who applied RD. I think it’s some time in April

@mom2teens I received Financial Aid/COA with no merit, only a $3000 loan which is ridiculous. Hence why I’m currently in the process of trying to find a way to appeal :frowning: . My AO said I should hear back from the Assistant VP of Admissions sometime early this week, so I will definitely post what they say on here.

@noah2425 Look forward to hearing if you get any good news. My S is in the same situation. He is going to reach out to his AO as well.

All reach schools not because you’re not qualified (clearly you are) but because these decisions are not based on your credentials, but based on what’s missing from their class ranks. Keep up the great work you’re doing and you will be glad you didn’t unnecessarily spend $250K before you turn 25. Go to the school that offers to invest in you!

Just wondering if anybody knows, on the common data set it says that out of 900 ish ed 600 ish were accepted. Is that only ed or both ed and ed2?

Well said! I really appreciate this, makes a lot of sense.

Just found on the most recent common data set on the U miami website that out of 1232 ED applicants (that’s ED and ED2), only 685 were accepted. That’s about a 56% acceptance rate, still relatively low.

That’s for the Fall 2017 entering class^

I decided to peruse through the common data set- I’m surprised to see that only 701 enrolled (full-time) freshmen were awarded merit scholarships out the 2342 total! You’d think it’d be more given the sheer price of their institution :))

Is there any harm? Will they take away aid? lmao

HELP!

I got a letter telling me that there were missing documents for my FA package, but I have sent my CSS profile and my parents’ tax returns (Im an international so I did not appllied for FAFSA and as I am not employed I dont have student tax returns). So, it actually seems like I have sent all the necessary documents they listed in the mail regarding the missing documents. I also e-mailed them and they have nor replied me yet. Has anyone experienced a similar situation or know sth helpful?

@d00rmanjack call them

QUESTION- anyone know the exact date ED2 Miami came out last year? all i know is mid to late feb.

feb 15th @cml123

FWIW, my daughter has a guy friend who was deferred by UM (pre-med, 32 ACT, 4.0gpa, 5 APS, Model UN, Tennis, muslim) but was accepted to UVA. Her best girl friend was deferred by UM (nursing, 31 ACT, 4.0gpa, 7APS, professional model, homecoming queen, x-country, soccer, photographer for yearbook, African-American) was accepted to Tulane. My D was accepted with $20K presidential (business, 32ACT, 34ss, 4.2 gpa, 12APS, all state tennis, white, her brother is a 4.0 sophomore at UM) was deferred by both UVA (her first choice) and Tulane. We are scratching our heads at these deferrals, and I feel bad for encouraging them to apply.

Maybe having a brother there helped my D get in with a scholarship, but also her major. UM has a great rep for medical sciences and may be more competitive than business. UM is not accepting as many as in the past (looking for a class of 2100 vs. 2346 last fall), probably due to freshman housing undergoing construction. UM may be doing what Tulane is - trying to force ED applicants to raise it’s rankings. Both schools are very expensive, draw the same students, and frankly, their ranking doesn’t justify the huge price tag. UM is undergoing a massive dorm building/renovation to compete with other schools. I noticed they are being put on stilts - maybe because climate change maps have the campus under water in 25 years.

Accepted into School of Engineering
Cost of Attendance Estimate: 71k
No merit scholarships
White male $100k+

I attend a public school in Missouri outside of St. Louis
12/308 but doesn’t matter because school doesn’t officially report class rank
4.0 scale with a max weighted of 5.0

35 ACT
4.467 W GPA
3.978 UW GPA (only B was an art class)
(GPAs include 1st semester of senior year)

5 AP tests completed (all A’s)
Euro (3) Calc AB (5) Comp. Gov (5) US Gov (5) Physics 1 (4)
Will take 5 more AP tests
Took a lot of honors classes in younger years

EC:
2 years of Football
4 years of Lacrosse
2 years of Youth and Government (YAG)
2 years of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA)
Minimal Volunteer work
but hey some is better than none eh?
Work 10 hrs/wk during school and 20 hrs/wk during summer

National Merit Commended Student (basically good but not good enough)

The letter said only 2100 were accepted of over 38000 applicants (I applied EA)
While it’s neat I was accepted and the lack of scholarships hurts. I’ve got better offers from Engineering programs of around the same or better prestige soooooo as much as I liked the campus and the weather (huge upgrade during winter), attendance for me is unlikely because 71k is too much. I guess my ECs weren’t strong enough or my essay blew (if UM does those
can’t remember) or maybe my lack of hard LA classes (but I hate LA so no regrets).

Tmg01 My son was accepted with a 32 in pre-med and denied from UVA so there is no rhyme or reason. Only difference with my son and your daughters friend is that my son is a white male.

He did get the 23,000 Presidential. His FAFSA says EFC is 17,500 however package we received shows we need to pay 33,500 a year to Miami and doesn’t show any loans. I’m totally confused as to how they determined his aide.
