University of Miami (FL)

Does anyone have any insights or impressions regarding UMiami for nursing?

It is the lowest-ranked nursing program that my D is looking at (other acceptances are at Pitt, Iowa, Case Western, USF-CA, Marquette, UTK, and Creighton), but I personally don’t put a ton of weight on rankings. Looking to hear about the quality of the program, diversity of the nursing student body, and whether instruction is limited/impacted by Florida’s political leanings.

Thanks in advance.

I am a bit surprised here. Political leaning for nurse major? For Political Science a get it, but what do you expect for nursing? Not treating democrats? Or prioritizing patients based on skin color? Seriously, what are even possibilities that come into your mind? I can’t imagine significant impact to medical, or technical majors… Am I wrong?

I can give you an example- FL is currently trying to get rid of immunization mandates for schools. This is a BIG DEAL and very political. Student nurses may do clinical rotations in school health clinics and their experience could be directly impacted by state mandates/laws. Another example is health insurance reimbursement, coding for Medicaid reimbursement, etc. Depending on what state you are practicing in, healthcare delivery is affected. Nurses practice based on state mandates and their scope of practice which impacts the students who shadow them.

My guess (I could be very wrong) is that Miami, as a private university, will not be impacted by state politics to the same degree as public institutions.

That being said…the above poster is correct. Nursing students will be doing rotations in hospitals, clinics, school clinics etc, and will have to follow public health and other laws put in place.

I definitely do not want this to be a political post, which is why I kept things vague, but I was thinking about things related to vaccination, gender affirming care, and abortion care – to name a few. My question was related to how much restrictive state laws impact the education students are receiving. Edited to add: I am not making moral judgements, but looking for insights regarding curricular impact (if any).

There are plenty of articles and discussions on this topic (two are attached), but I was seeking more firsthand experience.

Where does she likely want to live after graduation? There is something to be said for attending college and establishing professional relationships where you will end up. With the massive anti-science and anti-women sentiments of the state government in Florida, it is hard to imagine a serious person pursuing a healthcare career in that state.

She does not plan to stay in Florida (we are not from the south) — but four years of warm sunny weather and palm trees is tempting. Generally, I am fine with my kids trying new things for college (college provides a rare opportunity to do so), just curious about this particular nursing program.
