University of Michigan and UCLA

Do I have a good chance of getting into Michigan or UCLA with a 31 act and 3.97 uw and 4.3 w gpa? I also have a lot of EC’s and good essays.

Can you give a little more insight as to what those EC’s are?

I only ask because Extra curriculars are a large part of the college admissions process. Also what types of academic classes have you taken? AP, IB, Honors?

EC’s:
MathWorks Tutoring Coordinator
I organize meetings every Tuesday with a middle school counselor to tutor kids geometry, algebra, and trigonometry. I participate in tutoring as well.
2. Athletics: Club - AFC Academy
I play club soccer in the highest division in NorCal (NPL 1). I was captain of the team sophomore year as well as a starter and won many tournaments.
3. Athletics: JV/Varsity
I was the starting left back as a sophomore in 2016-17 and won NCS Championship. As a senior I am a varsity captain and starting left-back.
4. Key Club
I participated in community service weekly with activities such as shoreline clean up, helping out at soup kitchens, and gardening at local gardens.
5. Foreign Language
I attended German school outside of school at BAKS+. I received DSD1 for fluency and proficiency in German as a native speaker.
6. Shadowing Doctor
Because of my interest in medicine, I followed a professional physician around during the summer to get to know the daily schedule of a doctor.
7. Green Dot Ambassador
As a green dot ambassador, I fight bullying, harassment, and assault by learning about ways to intervene and stop harm at school.
8. Link Leader
I integrate incoming freshman into high school by leading groups through tours of campus, get-to-know-you activities, and getting lunch with them.
9. College 4 All
I made a website to help students of low economic backgrounds at local schools get access to free test prep. I won a $500 grant in order to advertise.
10. Soccer Coach
I was an assistant coach for the Under-13 AFC Academy Soccer team during the summer of my sophomore year. I ran trainings and camps while the coach was away.
11. Soccer Referee
I am a soccer referee with a class 8 license. I am both a center and an assistant referee.

I am in the IB program at my high school.
IB HL History of the Americas (Junior/Senior Year)
IB HL English (Junior/Senior Year)
IB SL Math (Junior Year)
IB TOK (Junior and Senior Year)
IB SL Env. and Soc. (Junior Year)
IB HL Computer Science (Junior Year SL, Senior Year HL)
AP Biology (Senior Year)
AP Stats (Senior Year)

I would show lots of demonstrated interest at UM. Know a kid who got into every ivy applied to including Harvard but was waitlisted at Michigan as he never visited or showed much interest for the school.

I will definitely EA there. What other ways can I show demonstrated interest?

Out of state is very tough to get in at Michigan. But your number 9 is awesome!!! I hope you play that up in an essay somewhere. You need to make it personal, unique and interesting and that hits it right there. Visiting of course of you can. Contact your regional counselor for Michigan. Go to any University of michigan events in your area and sign in.

Like @knowstuff said, Michigan and UCLA are hard to get into. However, with your test scores, grades, classes, and definitely extra curricular activities (all of those are awesome!!) I would say you have a fairly good shot getting into both!! Good luck

What is your intended major? That 31 is low for Michigan for certain colleges. .

My intended major will either be biology or Econ, so within the college of LSA.

ECs are looking good. 31 ACT is a little low for these schools, can you retake? If you are a senior and can’t retake then I wouldn’t let this stop you from applying. GPA is excellent. Make sure your essays are amazing, not just good. You certainly have a shot.

Thanks, do you know the average act for LSA at Michigan?

I agree your extracurriular #9 is awesome. Emphasize that. Your 31 ACT is low for both schools. Good luck!

Showing demonstrated interest for UM is not important according to the CDS, but is considered. Students have been admitted without showing any interest. Also, if you go back to the results or application thread from the Class of 2018, then there were many cases of kids showing demonstrated interest with “in the range” statistics that were either deferred or denied.

UCLA doesn’t care at all.

Your SAT may not get you into UCLA.
Are you instate for California?
If not, can your parents pay $65K per year? There is no funding for non-residents.

The UC’s are public schools that are funded by the State of California, so if the parents don’t pay instate taxes, you pay full price.

Also, going to UCLA does NOT guarantee you an advantage at the School of Medicine. There are so many California students applying to med school and there are NOT enough spaces. The competition is brutal.

The OP plays football and soccer in NorCal. I assume he is a resident of CA.

Yes, I am a California resident.
