University of Michigan Ann Arbor Early Action Fall 2025

Amplifying this paragraph from that link:

In order to qualify for EA, all required application materials, including the Common Application, high school transcript(s), School Report, and Teacher Evaluation, must be either electronically received or postmarked by Nov. 1.

UMichigan is unforgiving on this requirement…even though these items are outside the control of the student. That means the student has to stay vigilant on making sure their school counselor and teachers are aware of the Nov 1 deadline. Many schools have a grace period after the app deadline for non-student controlled materials to be received…Michigan is one of the schools that does not. No work around, no amount of pleading will change things. Same is true for their RD deadline as well.

Thanks. It is a lot of extra work on the teachers for the recs. I see some universities like UT,Austin asking students to use others outside school for recs, to reduce the burden on the teachers.

My sons school had a rule and you had to apply for your recs in Junior year so the teachers had the summer to get them done.

Your school system seems better. My son asked and submitted his profile in the first week of school. It has been 6 weeks and no recs have been written. Fingers crossed he will not miss some of these deadlines.

Have him talk to his teachers or use whatever software the school might use to keep track. My sons school was the top school in the state when he was there and yes, very organized when it came to college applications.

I start to nudge them personally. I let him do it and then when it gets close, I actually email the teachers myself. I find that a gentle polite “can you do this done?” from one adult to another works. (I’ve been through this with two kids now)

One of the questions we get a lot is “Should I apply EA”?

So for most students I would say yes. I just don’t see really any reason not to.

Most will get deferred anyway but at least you know your still in the running. Plus in theory you get another look.

Quick Question–I know at some other large universities you need to pay for housing with your application just to reserve your spot just in case, regardless of whether they take you or not. Is this true here? Thanks! Should we be paying a housing deposit?

No, that’s not the case with Michigan.

Thank you

Nope. You do housing after your accepted. Good luck.

What is the deadline to send in the high school counselor’s letter of recommendation? For EA at U-Mich. Thank you.

Typically by Nov 1st.

Hi! Curious how long it took for you to receive portal access? My daughter applied a few days ago and received the confirmation from Common App but nothing from UMich yet. I imagine things are moving more slowly so close to the EA deadline, but thought I’d try to get a ballpark. Thanks!

Same here, youngest applied 10/20 and no portal information yet. Hopefully by tonight.

S25 applied on 10/11 and received the portal email on 10/15.

Nothing Michigan does is superfast. They get like over 50,000 applications for EA. If it’s well over a week and a half give them a call. They are there to help but times can be very random.
