The email w/the portal link came through today - so the same timeline as the other person who responded. Now she just tries to forget about it until January!
Great news. It will be here sooner then you think. Please have safeties she’s happy to go to. The last few cycles of college applications have been tough. So many deserving students and so few seats to give at any college these days.
She does! Most of the schools on her list are safeties given the type of school she’s interested in and her planned area of study - but even at the safeties there are the unknowns about honors programs, etc. So many variables!
Yep. Keep asking questions. Use the Common Data sets for the schools under the “C” section and that will give you a clue of what each school expects and your chances.
Hi-I’ve been a lurker for a couple of years and found so many comments helpful in this journey. Here is my first post.
Question about letters of recommendation. Common App indicates 1 teacher LOR is required and one non-teacher (employer, coach etc.) is optional. The Michigan admission’s website only references the teacher LOR. My D25 has submitted the teacher LOR through Common App. She also has a non-teacher LOR but has not submitted it yet. Her Michigan portal indicates that her application is complete for EA. It is a strong non-teacher LOR that speaks to her leadership and service experience. She didn’t want to submit a non-teacher LOR if it would delay her application being reviewed or irritate an AO because it wasn’t requested/required. Any thoughts?
Follow the rules set by Michigan. But you can always call admissions now and ask. They are very friendly .
Get your applications in for EA Nov. 1st.
You can add the extra LOR on or before Nov 1. I agree with a comment that says to " call admissions " just to make sure. All the best.
There is no such thing as irritating an AO. If a school does not want additional recs they can disable the option in their application. There are schools like USC that take only one rec from an academic teacher.
One thing I will say about that is all schools will just parse on what they actually need. People send extra stuff. But. Following the schools rules is also a thing. The Aos at schools like Michigan are very busy. Less is more kinda thing. If they want more they will ask for it as students get deferred and at some point “might” want mid term grades and such.
I know what you are saying. But they have required:1 optional:3. I would interpret this as they would be happy to take two recommendations as long as they are different and add value.
FWIW our kids sent in 3 in total: 2 academic, 1 counselor. Both got in (early) and are now there and loving it.
FYI, not sure this is covered elsewhere… Might put some folks minds at ease in regard to missing paperwork, since at this point Michigan says up to ten days to process. But, if you submitted your app through common app, look on the dashboard to see that the school has downloaded. Then, if you haven’t received your email to access the Michigan portal, you might be able to use the “Forgot password” feature to access, here:

Thank you!! I just tried and it worked!
Chance me kind of
I have a question regarding SAT scores. So I go to an instate school where the average SAT score is 890 and I scored a 1230 which was one of the top three scores in our school that year(possibly the highest but they didn’t tell us our ranking) A Umich Rep told me that if anyone from our school gets at least 1200 they’re very likely to get in despite grades. I have a 3.5 gpa due to a very troubling home environment. Moreover I was invited to the Slice of life event at the university which was extremely exclusive according to my student ambassador and the fact that there is barely a trace of it anywhere online.
I had an extra year of virtual schooling due to covid so I couldn’t partake in any extracurriculars besides self studying Korean which I did for all four years of high school.
I was apart of drama for three years volunteering all three for departments that I wasn’t apart of and became the head of the biggest department jr year.
I babysit a toddler for up to nine hours daily as my mother suffers from mental illness and my father works. Moreover I’ve suffered abuse from my mother for my entire life due to her illness.
I played Varsity Soccer for three years one of which I played JV and Varsity, resulting in me playing an illegal amount of games in a week. I also played the most games on the team and am a head of the team this year
Help found NAHS at my school and in NHS
I have a few other eccs but its just a lot so ill leave it at that.
However I was wondering if the Rep was just talking when referring to the SAT score chancing or do I have a good chance of getting in?
Did you apply yet? EA might be beneficial to you if you have not already submitted.
Apply EA, which is today. You are an outlier at your school and Michigan likes that. If your school says you have a chance you are evaluated by others at your school. You would be an exception if you look at the CDS (common data sets) for Michigan. Your school counsler should be writing up their personal brief about your situation. You won’t know if you don’t apply. Being invited to Slice of Life is a big deal since they are seeking you out. Nothing is guaranteed but still. Apply today and hit send.
I applied two weeks ago!! Thank you for your insight
yep, thanks for the reply😁
