D25 was deferred. Michigan is her #1 choice, so she is pretty bummed. OOS, SAT superscore 1490, 4.64 weighted GPA, rigorous coursework, athlete, various activities and leadership roles.
Honestly, OOS tuition is out of reach for us, so it would be unlikely that she would attend anyway. However, it would have been such a nice feather in her cap to be accepted.
I think you bring up so many good points and we have a similar situation.
OOS 3.85 gpa (so a little lower than many others)
high test score (35 ACT)
No financial aid
Had a great visit and an interview at the Residential College over the summer, where he got in. My son also wrote about this visit in his why Michigan essay.
Daughter home from work, we looked…. She has been postponed. Stats are: 3.9/4.3, 10APs, is in an engineering pathway, has a couple community college classes (science related), varsity/club athlete, founder and treasurer of a very active club at her school, volunteers 8 hours a week as a coach for a club sport for six months a year, works min 12 hours a week at a paying job.
She wasn’t disappointed at all, was happy she wasn’t rejected and more than happy to turn in her first semester grades, she is taking 3APs, an engineering capstone, and a course at the community college, earned all As…
So we do this again in a couple months.
Congratulations to those who were admitted!

This thread is for students and parents to post about admission results, their profiles (if they wish), whether they will attend, etc. Questioning the motives of other posters regarding their choices is not acceptable, and posts that do so will be removed.
When we booked a tour over the summer there was an option to interview at different colleges within the university. It was pretty quiet over summer so it was actually quite easy to make it work.
This is a great strategy and both my kids had talks with the heads of certain departments when we visited schools. They were like interviewing them to get more information about their major etc. My daughter did follow a student during the day also.
Besides gaining valuable information you can use that information in your essays. One great way to show interest.
Late to the party, as D25 had a late hockey game with a buzzer-beating game-winning-goal with only 2.6 seconds left on the clock… whew!
Come home to even better news - accepted, OOS CoE, 4.0 UW, 1560 SAT. Took most of the AP classes offered at their school (~ 7), 4 DE math classes beyond Calc B/C, 3-sport varsity athlete and captain of 2, several engineering & tech-related ECs and an internship.
Good luck to all - we were on the other side of this 2 years ago when our son was deferred and then waitlisted.
S25 OOS postponed for COE. 4.0 UW/ 4.83 W, 1550 SAT. Seems OK with it as he already has a few good options. Still waiting to hear from a few more - hopefully next week
Congrats to all the kiddos who were accepted! For those that were disappointed - Hang in there. It’s still early in the process. It will all work out in the end!
DS25 accepted to COE. Interested in data science and computer engineering. 4.0 UW/4.7 W; 1500 SAT; 34 ACT; 13 APs + 7 college classes; lots of research, tutoring, community service; legacy but doesn’t seem like that matters so much anymore.
So…I am sure that this has been answered but I can’t find it…
I know that the change to Ross means that if you are rejected from Ross that’s it. You can’t be considered for LSA or another program.
Does that change at all with a deferral? Once deferred from Ross can you indicate that now that you’re in the RD pool you would like to be also considered for another program? Or, is your deferral only to the Ross RD pool full stop?
I would have the student contact their AO and ask. I haven’t seen that directly covered anywhere…it looks like one can change the college in the app, but only before the relevant deadline (so that might be the final answer).
We encourage applicants to continue with the school or college they first selected on their Common Application. If your academic interests have changed, applicants can update their application to a different school or college through Enrollment Connect but only if any applicable application deadlines have not passed and you have not received an admission decision on your initial application.
My understanding is no. You would be basically reapplying to Michigan. I would call admissions and ask that question. Let us know if the answer is different. At this point know that you are still in consideration.
