University of Michigan Ann Arbor Early Action Fall 2025

And u believe that with a simple division, 60000 applicant in 2 moths … 20 sec per kid , how u review ANY kid I. 20 sec, I believe they do believe they do not use AI to rank kid but they got to use AI to decide what to take or not

Reminder that this is the EA thread for U of Michigan to share results and discuss Michigan. Discussions about other schools, debate, discussions about AI (which UM doesn’t use) are off topic to this thread.

Please move on. Further posts will be deleted.

TIA!

My mod note was not a suggestion. Take it to PM please!

Congrats on your acceptance and thank you for your thoughts. All of her ECs are easy to verify - I would hope AOs would ask to verify ECs before assuming exaggeration. She had great feedback on her essays - but who knows? Now to understand what to include in the ‘expression of continued interest’. Her finals are this coming week and she’s tracking with all A’s in all classes including 3 APs and 3 DEs. She presented research at a national conference in DC last month. I’m assuming she should include those updates. I know that there are tons of super bright, high achievers out there.

Thank you for your thoughts, Jenny. There’s certainly a lot of ways to interpret a deferral. The good news is that it’s not a rejection and she’s still got a shot (along with A LOT of other amazing kids)!

Why would Michigan differ a kid who applied regular decision? Why would they review him early and then defer to the round he/she originally applied anyway?

You should have a letter detailing what they want. Update grades will be sent and your LOCI. Tell them why she wants to be there and how she will be an active participant on campus. Don’t just repeat the "Why Michigan letter already sent.

I feel your pain. My daughter was in a similar situation last year. Write the LOCI and have her reach out to her regional rep if she hasn’t already. What’s her major? You’ll make yourself crazy if you start comparing her stats to others - sometimes they make no sense . My daughter was deferred and then waitlisted and then got it in. When she arrived on campus this past Fall, she went and reviewed her application (admitted students are allowed to do this) wondering what was it that didn’t get her in initially. She didn’t really find the answers she was looking for but it was an interesting process/review. Best of luck to your daughter - don’t give up…SO MANY deferrals!

Thank you, I’m getting a better perspective from this thread. Lots of good life lessons in resiliency this whole process. She’s still got a shot and she’s encouraged by that opportunity. I just went into Naviance to look at her school’s history with UM. Her school’s yield at UM is exactly 1/3 (33.33%). Compared to others from her school that were admitted historically, her GPA is in the top 5% and her SAT is in the middle 50%.

Physics/Astro major. She’s definitely not giving up. This kid has more grit than anyone I know! Lesson in resiliency!

As I mentioned way up thread,

Way up thread I mentioned that Michigan admissions requires patience. It’s entirely possible that a few applicants here, who have been postponed, will be waitlisted. Michigan waitlists a boatload of applicants (27,000 offered/18,000 accepted WL).

Patience, if you have it.

I hope it doesn’t happen to anyone here, but I thought I should mention the possibility or probability.

@Knowsstuff - really great job with this forum.

Michigan AOs read every app. If UCLA can guarantee to read every app twice (they receive the most apps of any school around 146K last year), all schools can do that if they want. It’s just a matter of hiring enough readers to get the job down. UCLA has several hundred external readers. Not sure how many Michigan has.

and ask what? i got deferred from Purdue and umich and want to see the benefit in doing this

Definitely include those, but also include information that suggests you did your research for Mich (name specific programs, highlight shared goals values etc).

Michigan gets a lot of apps; they read everyone’s app but they just don’t have time to fact–check or go into depth. Stand out in some way that isn’t grades or stats. Good Luck! You got this!

Im going to take a shot in the dark and say your daughter’s deferral is clouding your judgement here in a way that is condescending of people who get a lower SAT score. I understand that it must be tough for you to see kids with a lower SAT get in Early Action, but you shouldn’t be attributing their achievements solely to yield protection.

In between the time I last replied and now, I talked to the other kids in my class who got in. It was us 3 out of around 30 applicants ranging between a 1200 and a 1570. One had a 1520 for Ross and the other a 1530 for LSA. Everyone else was deferred (except for one rejection???). We are very different people who wrote about very different things and had very different ECs. No one is legacy or super wealthy.

To turn back to Michigan admissions as a whole, they do not use AI as another commenter said, and if you need links backing this up I can provide them. And while they get a ton of applications, they are one of the richest and largest public schools in the nation; they have the resources to read everyone’s application and they do this. My cousin currently goes there and he is in a frat, his friends are a mix of salutatorians and kids who barely got by. Obviously this is something you’re gonna have to take my word for, but all the other data suggests it really is holistic. If you have a problem with holistic admissions, or didn’t even bother to show any interest in Michigan at all, then I don’t know what to tell you. Withdrawal your application, and there will be a line of 1550+ valedictorians ready to take your place.

So It’s holistic. It’s been that way for a long time. Students, once at Michigan can request their files and some have posted theirs on different social media sites. What they say is interesting.

You are mostly compared to your own school mostly. That doesn’t mean the person with the most Aps or highest scores get in. There is so much more to the application.

One example can be the students that has good grades but has to work to help support his family after school or has to watch his siblings so no ecs. Work takes 30 hours a week.

In my world it’s the high school competitive dancer that work outs over 40 hours a week and travels around the US competing. Good grades still and lots of drive but not great Stats in comparison.

Lots of reasons they choose certain students in EA. But… Lots of students get in, in RD also.

It’s a long ride. We all need to show grace and compassion. Congratulate those that got in. This is what I taught my kids to do.

There are still lots of acceptances to go.

It goes both ways. At the same time assuming a high stats kid is only high stats is also insulting or assuming their essays are “weak” or they don’t “stand out” etc. it’s really this simple. Congratulate those who got in and empathize with those who didn’t. Don’t blame the kids who didn’t by assuming they aren’t one thing or another. I’m so totally over all that and I see it EVERYWHERE. People are reeling a bit, give them a minute without shaming them. At the same time if your kid didn’t get in you should refrain from commenting about the kids who did. Just give everyone grace.

I don’t think demonstrated interest is a big factor. I showed none and was admitted EA so clearly it isn’t necessary

I still don’t understand why they would review an RD applicant in EA and then defer back to RD.
