I would like to send a big thanks to everyone’s consulting and advice on this forum throughout this long and painful process: it made everything a bit easier. Its almost surreal having this experience be over, and I am glad its done.

Best of luck to everyone no matter where you go!

LOCI discussed how I’m originally from Michigan, my love for UMich, annual visits to UMich, Mich-MSU game every fall (including sitting through the downpour two years ago in The Big House), cousin who works at UMich, spinning the cube, Reggie Bee … EVERYTHING I could think of to convey just how much I want this. I figured I had nothing to lose.

Not mad about not getting in, just mad it took six months since I applied to get a decision and the fact the local rep said I was an extremely good candidate for admission when telling him everything I listed above. World’s biggest Ohio State fan for the rest of my life now even though I won’t be going there lol.

Not the best news but not unexpected. I’m shocked I was waitlisted, to be honest. Congratulations to all the admitted students! If I try to transfer, who knows? We may meet again ?

Yield protection or nah? Waitlisted from LSA, not taking spot!! Hope this information helps future classes!

Decision: EA, Deferred (sent LOCI about state-level music and a minor schedule change, made it clear I would consider Michigan without music major)

Major: Undeclared in LSA and Music Education in SMTD (already rejected in December)

OBJECTIVE:
-Unweighted GPA: 3.98 / 4

-Weighted GPA: 4.58 / 5

-That is about half my classes as honors or AP. All As except one B sophomore year.

-6 AP. 14 honors.

-My school does not rank, but I know that I am right around 65 of my class of 720.

-ACT: 36 (36, 36, 34, 36) One sitting.

-SAT II: None.

-AP Exams: Junior year was United States History (5), English Language (5) and Music Theory (5). Senior year will be Environmental Science, Psychology and Calculus AB.

-From large public school in a rather well-off community in suburban Midwest. Sends lots of students to top 30 schools and the likes. Michigan is a popular choice, at least one hundred applying each year. Top students tend to get deferred and many waitlisted. Female, white.

EXTRACURRICULARS:
-Top musician in state on my instrument, invited to state music education conference for two years in a row, honors ensembles both times. Played at regionals for three years, upward trend.

-Help out some of my teachers during my free period. I teach underclassmen, and I mentioned in my application that I obviously want to go into education.

-Marching band section leader for three years, did marching band for four years, top concert band and orchestra for three years. Pit orchestra for three years.

-Two-time Camp NaNoWriMo winner. Wrote a novel in a month.

-No employment.

HONORS:
-National Honors Society, state commended, Top Scholar at school, AP Scholar, etc.

-Outstanding achievement in Spanish and physics junior year.

LETTERS:
-One letter of recommendation from United States History teacher. Could have been okay, or good, as she’s a strong writer but didn’t know me that well. (7/10)

-Other letter from my Spanish teacher who adored me! (9/10)

-Additional letter from band director. According to my counselor, the letter was amazing! But this may have shown Michigan that it was more important that I study music education (already rejected from that major) than it was to attend Michigan. Ugh. (10/10)

-Counselor was vouching for me. She’s also very articulate in her writing. (8/10)

ESSAYS:
-Common App essay was about regional and state music as mentioned above, about learning from mistakes/failure. It sounds a lot like a cliché “sports injury” story, except about dropping my instrument. (8/10)

-All three supplements were about band. First was about how I’d continue peer teaching, second was about contributions to marching band camp, third was about the music school and being part of the studio I was quickly rejected from (yikes). (8/10)

I will not be accepting my spot on the waitlist, so the idea is somebody else moves up.
Congratulations if you’re in, and good luck in the college search to everybody else!!

Waitlisted
LSA undeclared
4.0 UW
IB diploma
1320 SAT
In-state
Top 10% of my class

Good essays
Did not send LOCI or mid-feb grades

Told myself if I got waitlisted I’d reject since I’m already in an awesome residential college @ MSU but I keep psyching myself out haha

In-state daughter accepted to LSA

1440 SAT (710 verbal, 730 quant)
3.9 uw GPA, 4.0 uw senior mid-year grades
4 AP’s (one 5; 3 in-progress)
Lots of ECs and volunteer service
Three major leadership activities
Emailed LOCI concurrent with mid-year grades

Rec letters and essays communicated a coherent narrative

Anybody know how many UM tends to take off the waiting list? Chances to get in on the WL remote or decent? My S was WL, which I’m very okay with cuz we all really love Wake Forest and this makes the decision easier.

7% last year was the wait list number

Thanks clueless
