@Nhatrang Here’s a recent thread on LSA Honors program:
Thanks @sushiritto
The Honors Program is a personal decision. At some schools, such as ASU Barrett or Penn State Schreyer, the honors program can be a huge benefit, very prestigious. At UMich, I get the feeling it’s not really a big deal, but definitely investigate it for yourself.
The one thing that I can say is that there’s PLENTY of school work to do without being in the honors program. Plan on being as busy as a :bz
Anyone deferred hear back yet??
@sushiritto yeah, seems like the program provides some housing and advisory perks. D applied she dragged having to write more essays but she did. She got into the penn state honors but she knows she won’t be going there (she said penn state is like UM except UM is 10 times better lol). All these extra works, wish the all the admission decisions would just come out all at once. I know, first world problems…
Has anyone’s decision tab disappeared yet?
@Nhatrang Your D can always join the Honors program during her time there, if she desires.
BTW, a very good buddy of mine is a Penn State alum and his D goes there now as a freshman. We rib each other, but Penn State is an excellent school. Although UM did beat Penn State 42-7 on parents weekend last November. ;))
He brags about Penn State’s wrestling team being undefeated for X amount of years and being #1. When you have to brag about your wrestling team…
Kind of getting super excited for Friday night (or Saturday morning, I guess). Also, just found out I have the flu so I think this will only make me stalk this thread/my Wolverine Access account even more…
Nothing is gonna happen Friday night.Anyone who knows U M closely can vouch that this is how they select applicants for admission. For them yield should be good. It increases their ranking. Its ridiculous. Even if I am offered a chance I am not going to be part of a Uof M which for last 5-6 months hasn’t cared for applicants. At least if not to their standard I deserved a denial. But No, they will keep me guessing. My GPA is 4. SAT is 1520. ALL perfect scores in IBDP. Killer essays and responses. Have received offers from 7 Universities. Only deferred in MIT. And i am expected to just wait for U of M when my mid-year report reached them before 14th Jan and LOCI by 20th Jan.
Be Patient…
The mind often tries to fill in the blanks. Don’t.
Each school has its own methodology in deciding its next admit class. Schools of different size have markedly different approaches. Larger Schools like U of M have various Colleges which each have their own character and needs.
The Process is daunting and yes inefficient across many schools. I like U of M efforts and applaud their methodology as achieving their status as the number one State University in the country.
Then it’s a matter of fairly addressing the Outliers and Transfers among other subset categories of applicants.
My D18 has been accepted by 8 other programs too. Deferred here at U of M and it does “appear” to have a Yield protect aspect to it. That’s ok. Should my daughter get denied that too is ok. It’s the nature of the beast. There are multiple applicants just as worthy as my daughter lined up and at some point it becomes a lottery. We get that frustration too.
They need to protect their numbers so as to on balance send just the right number of offers with some predictability to anticipate just the right number of admits. So as to not over-enroll an incoming class.
U of M is an outstanding University. An accept at any point in time is the same opportunity to achieve should U of M fit best. U of M remains a top choice University on my daughter’s list of schools until we hear otherwise.
The date of April 1st ish is a more reliable point in time yet U of M has even said through mid April. Anything sooner is a gift.
I suggest Patience are in order…
Enjoy and the best of Luck to All
smar alec, you should be very happy and proud that you were accepted to 7 universities and deferred by MIT, that’s wonderful. I consider even a deferral from MIT an unbelievable achievement. Wow! :-bd
Hopefully, UMich follows their usual pattern and has a wave on Friday and you’re accepted. Good luck to you and everyone. Everyone worked hard and you’re all smart and that’s why you’re here!
Can someone help me understand the yield argument for why a school would delay decisions? I’ve read that a few times on this site. I may be missing something, but other than ED which happened a long time ago, why would announcing decisions later benefit them? If everyone has until May 1 to officially commit, they haven’t gained any new information about my intentions. Personally, I am much more likely to choose a school who tells me on March 1, or before, than a school who waits until April 19. At some point, for emotional, logistical or financial reasons, we all have to move on.
One school I was accepted to back in December recently sent an email asking if I planned to attend, no longer was interested, or was still unsure. While they can’t base all decisions on the responses they receive, I thought it was brilliant. Just because you applied to a school and have been accepted doesn’t mean it is even still in consideration, even if you are their ideal applicant. The relationship has to go both ways. Another school sent an email saying that they realize the wait has been long and they still plan to send decisions starting on the date their previously published.Communication is key. We are all willing to wait longer for something when we have information.
Hopefully we aren’t waiting much longer.
Hi, I was deferred but only received an email and my decision tab never popped up. Anyone else have this problem or know why I would never have the tab?
I think it’s kinda funny how some people say that even if they’re accepted, they’ll decline because they’ve had to wait so long or because umich handles the application process badly. Go ahead and don’t accept, there are thousands of other students that will take your place instantly. In addition, everyone is going through the exact same thing. As a current freshman at umich, I was also deferred last year and waited until the end of March to be accepted. Yeah, it sucks, I experienced it first hand. But it’s still shocking to me how egotistical some people are in this thread…
Hi, my son is waiting/ deferred like everyone else. He plans to study engineering, is OOS, ACT 35, SAT Math 2 & Chemistry both 800. The good news is he does have some acceptances, and overall is coping. He does LOVE that MI has a really strong music program and he plans to continue playing music and maybe have a minor in it. Any how, best of luck to everyone!
@CO1234 Someone (not me) had a great explanation some time back on this thread about yield protection and spacing the decisions over a period of month, for example.
The argument for decisions to be made on or around 2/1, 3/1, 3/29 and 4/19, like Ross has committed to, is that the admissions dept. can closely monitor the progress of their student commitments over “x” period of time, instead of releasing all 8,000 (assumption based on last year’s RD) acceptances on one day. And the EA commitments will obviously play a big part into their later admission decisions. Thus, if there’s a lower level of commitments to UMich during the month of February, post 2/1 wave, then based upon some algorthim, UMich may raise the level of acceptances in the next batch. Or vice versa and begin the process of waitlisting and/or rejecting appplicants.
@fishgirl324 Generally, no decision tab means you applied RD, but that doesn’t seem to be the case with you.
To all once again… It is worth the wait and agony you are going through, trust me, if you are accepted into Michigan and you choose to go,you will be rewarded with an amazing university experience. It’s worth the wait.
Just got an email that said some students may receive an admission decision before their HAIL Interview, because the HAIL Interview window extends to March 17th. Did any other HAIL Winter Interviewees receive this email?
@bjr829 My son just got the same email. I guess that reinforces the idea that decisions will be coming out soon.
Same case for me. Well it might’ve appeared when I didn’t go back to check but now it’s gone. @fishgirl324
