Actually this is when yield protection applies the most. If you don’t send a LOCI your probably done, if you do and have very high stats/GPA I would expect an acceptance. BTW the LOCI should state the obvious, that UMich is your #1 choice and it admitted you would definitely attend.
The deferral letter specifically said not to send anything besides the midyear transcript. Not everybody reads CC, and rejecting strong students because they didn’t know to send a LOCI doesn’t sound right. I hope UMich doesn’t do this.
@CU123, I think we are saying the same thing…which is if an OOS high stats/highly qualified applicant has let admissions know he/she wants to enroll at Michigan, the application will be viewed on the merits (i.e. acceptance will not be further delayed for “yield protection” reasons)
I guess we are then…
I’ve seen enough acceptances to know that some accepted students sent LOCI’s, and swear by them, and I’ve also seen accepted students who didn’t send a LOCI, because the deferral letter stated not to send one. Honestly, I have no clue what’s best.
And, if you applied RD, therefore were not deferred, how does the LOCI play into the decision? It wouldn’t, right? Shouldn’t all applicant get the same consideration?
I would not send an LOCI if applied RD. I imagine an AO getting irritated by all of the information/burden of an application. Unnecessary.
@CaptainRonnie, my son has the exact same high test scores (1590/800) and the rest but also has a perfect 4.0, and he was deferred and is still waiting, too. So clearly GPA isn’t everything. And it’s clear from CC that many have been admitted with considerably lower test scores and/or grades.
UM may say GPA is paramount, but I no longer believe that.
just an FYI someone on reddit posted that their view decision tab disappeared this morning
I’ve sent a letter of continued interest and my first semester grades in early February. I was admitted on the March 1st round (originally deferred from EA.)
People’s decision tabs disappearing… possible wave on Friday? Could also be an isolated, individual admit
There are two reports of disappearing tabs on page 114, two pages back. No decisions as of yet.
where can I find the decision tab (or where was it)??
@CaptainRonnie I agree with your statement 100%. We thought our EA OOS D was a shoo-in based on her stats and she was deferred. Private school, 4.0 UW, 4.6 W, 32 ACT, tons of AP and three IB, over 600 volunteer hours, started her own non-profit which is a completely legitimate company, award from Congress, NHS, too many more awards to list… and still…deferred. Each school knows what they are looking for and they want to have a diverse group of students. What I mean by that is they don’t want all perfect kids but instead, more of a balance that works for their university. Sure we are disappointed that it wasn’t a straight out acceptance but they may have already hit their quota on kids like ours. Everything happens for a reason right?!?
The University of Michigan must have some sort of Madness to their Strategy in deferring so many high stats applicants.
:-w
Yes I get the “balance” hypothesis. I’m a big proponent of it actually. I argue often with a friend over the Holistic approach verses the High Stats only thinking.
Imagine an island of “just” high achievers in Lord of the Flies.
what is the link to reddit for umich. thanks
Don’t forget about the recommendation letters. They are extremely important as well, if you have a bad recommendation letter or a neutral one, it can stop you from getting admitted. A bad one usually overrides all the high stats, from what i’ve heard.
I hope this isn’t the case for you kids and parents. @CaptainRonnie, @J123D123, @MLG2019 @TwoHearted, etc… My heart goes out to you. I know it’s so frustrating. I sincerely hope everyone on here getting in. <3
Hi Nhatrang,
No her OOS “The Right Stuff” is well rounded.
5.22 GPA, 1500 SAT, 12 plus AP’s. Solid Essays and Recommendations. Solid EC’s and Athletics. Great Success in Mock Trials. { ( just argued and advanced to state finals second year in a row ) the one Judge ( with a very large highly successful law firm ) highly complimented her as being “on point” and having great skills in adjusting to the witnesses }. Accepted at 9 schools and deferred at 3. No rejections. U of M is a Top Choice because of its unique major of Political Science, Economics and Philosiphy. As well as a very good Mock Trial Team. She also has had very good feedback from friends who go to U of M.
She will land on her feet but U of M is a good/great fit. I’m happy for those admitted and those yet to gain access.
For those parents and more importantly kids who share in the same Deferred/RD wait…
Good Luck and Best Wishes to All
@Nhatrang You’re right about the letters and my D has very good ones. The math teacher showed it to her and the Bio teacher LOVES her so I would guess that one would have been very good too. But a great point that often is not brought up.
@J123D123 That is impressive stats, it frustrates me that you heaven’t gotten the acceptance already. The fact that 9 other schools admitted her I am sure her recs are stellar. I am sure she will land on her feet, it’s UMich’s loss if they didn’t want her, but I am sure they will come to their senses.
