University of Michigan Class of 2023 - Deferred Applicants

@racereer @sushiritto Thank you! I know the same question has been discussed many times before. Never knew going to college is so challenging, it’s like worrying your child may not find a girlfriend/boyfriend and then worry if he/she is marrying the right person!

when is the next wave coming out

Percent chance of a wave this Friday??

There is a chance that MANY schools may be in hold pattern for a few days as they go through their admits with a fine-tooth comb to make sure that they don’t have anyone in the recent indictments. I wouldn’t be surprised that certain schools under scrutiny delay their anticipated decisions and that they need another week “to be sure”…as a result, there will be students holding on to their “admit tickets” that wouldn’t necessarily do that, there might be admissions officers who are more conservative, that there may be some very far-reaching ripples as a result of the news today.

Hope they’ll admit folks that can’t afford to cheat sooner ?

I hope the release date isn’t impacted by this scandal (I doubt that it would). The school should just go ahead as planned (why let those bad apples spoil it for everyone else?). And if needed in the future, rescind it for special effect. Actions have consequences. So glad UMich isn’t named as one of the schools, though.

I have been asked if this scandal will impact the 29th release. I say no. There is actually time to scan applicants etc if needed going forward. The UM president is sorta on top of things. I have not looked at all to see if Michigan has issued a statement yet but I assume one is coming. But they also have some deep donor’s also like any school does. I really hope this opens up spots for deserving students like you all.

It should not take them too long. It seemed like how it worked, the only ones they could really catch would be the fake athletes. There is not a way for them to verify each applicant’s test scores etc

is it true that for deferred students, decisions can come out into april?

@hannah1789 yes, because now we’re considered regular decision applicants

@cdr2001 they release regular decisions into april? wow i’ve never heard of that for other schools, i thought they were all before april 1st. crazyyy

The estimated remaining “wave” dates are on or around 3/29 and 4/19. For waitlisted applicants, the wait can potentially take until June or even July.

This comment (confirmed by a 2nd poster) was just posted on the UMich transfer thread, if you didn’t see it:

For what it’s worth, S applied to Kines EA, deferred but didn’t receive the “unforeseen circumstances” email.

Makes Sense…

Thing is. Odds are many schools are going to look back in-house and quickly determine what athletic areas if any might have been compromised. Guessing U of M is likely/hopefully clean. However there will undoubtably be other programs and schools compromised. Discovering the academic cheats will likely take more time as the facts of the investigation become more clear. So I’m guessing the decisions there will likely look to Claw Back once Proof is Beyond doubt.

The many schools likely have a no cheating policy so anyone discovered {( as the feds dig deeper into the records ) the sources are going to come clean as much as possible to reduce their sentencing } having cheated past or present should be at the high risk of expulsion or recision of their acceptance.

I have little sympathy for the kids. My daughter knows if I breath in any given direction so there is no way I could pull off any one of these schemes without her knowing it was wrong.

I call it common sense and responsibility. Rule as 95% of these kids are likely deserving of expulsion on multiple grounds. The false premises of acceptance into the institution. The unfair gain over all other applicants. The lack of moral or ethical conduct. Many schools espouse how they admit based on merit ( Holistic ) and certainly not fraudulent cheating. The schools need to hold these kids to the strictest consequences for their actions given the nature of this case of being the biggest scam ever investigated covering entry into colleges under false pretenses.

The actions of the parent and/or the child is equally reprehensible knowing or unwittingly. Good Children have been displaced by these severe actions and the consequences should be as stringent to deter future cheats. My daughter gets angry if someone cheats on an individual small scale. Our kids need to know these institutions will take actions that cover the actions of all those involved or who benefited from the illegal and unethical actions of others.

It’s interesting that Transfer Kinesiology applicants received the email, but not Freshman Kinesiology applicants.

I think the release date of 3/29 should give them plenty of time to go back and check. There are probably schools that weren’t named (as the affidavit only gave enough information to establish probable cause) so I’m sure most schools will be going though applications, particularly athletes, once again as well as conducting internal investigations.

Considering that I haven’t heard any other schools announce that they are delaying notifications, the Transfer Kinesiology delay is probably unrelated… Or maybe a transfer applicant was found to have suspicious credentials???

@sushiritto what happens if someone were to be waitlisted? Can they not commit to another school on the May 1st deadline?

Not sure I quite understand your question, but during RD, you can commit to another RD school and if you’re later admitted to UMich (post 5/1) from the waitlist, then you can withdraw your acceptance to the other RD school in favor of going to UMich. But you would probably lose your deposit to the other school. I’d assume it’ll be non-refundable.

March 19th is 6 days away
Then I have AU and BC on 22nd/23rd
Before we know it…It will be the 28th IVY DAY
