University of Michigan Class of 2029 Official RD Thread

DD was waitlisted. She will be declining and moving on. We visited earlier this week and after seeing the campus and the town she decided it wasn’t the right place for her anyway. Congrats to those who were accepted and good luck to those who are still waiting for good news.

My son was waitlisted. He expected a rejection so not too upset.
He’s international, 4.0 GPA at IB school, Head Ambassador of his school, Head of House, Junior Varsity Hockey Captain, over 100 hours service, part-time job since Year 9, mentor to Year 8s, started his own copywriting business earning over $6000.
He has other amazing options, including a Presidential Scholarship to UMiama Herbert Business, but he will remain on the waitlist as he doesn’t want to close any doors just yet.

My son got waitlisted as well. Does anyone know how long it takes to get off the waitlist in U mich? We accept the offer to be on the waitlist. When will they finally close the waitlist, and do they send an email that the waitlist is officially closed

There’s a college consultant with a tiktok series who claims that Michigan tends to start pulling from the waitlist in April, though I have no idea where he gets his info. Maybe it’s out of date.

That’s nice … What people don’t know is Michigan can do a slow drip of acceptances whenever they want to. Yes,they used to. I have seen consultants charge $8,000 to “help” get people off the wait list. Be careful what you read. BTW - I will do it for $1,000:blush:

@Knowsstuff since you know stuff, any additional information you can provide us on Ross waitlist? First year Ross with direct admit and got waitlisted. Anyway to know the waitlist size and so the chances?

Nope.. Sorry. My best advice is to move on and be surprised later. I have a meeting soon but will post something later about how to handle wait lists etc

Yes! Let us know your thoughts on Ross. My bank account is happy to move on from it and my daughter committed to another school last night!!! Woohoo!

Is there any communication that happens on the waitlist. If you have a selective merit scholarship at a peer institution is that worth mentioning? I’m guessing no. Plenty of these kids have great acceptances elsewhere.

I will comment more latter. Talking to Djs /bands for upcoming son wedding :wedding: and have to recover from last night’s game.

They don’t care what offer you got. They have 30 other people that want that spot ready to commit probably more)

Your daughter committed. You’re done. Lol.

I am sure she’s going to an amazing school. She still has to May 1st to commit so her actions talk volumes. One mistake I made (yep, just one with two kids :joy::victory_hand:), was not listening to their actions. Our son was on the wait list for GT but committed to Michigan EA. We, the parent’s, were just intrigued. We, the parent’s, created undo stress.

I can go on about this process but it seems you’re daughter has decided and a huge congratulations to her :confetti_ball:

Thank you! Feels amazing to be done!!! I’ll be back next year with my junior! Learned so much this year. I agree with you. It was the most amazing feeling to see her decide and be so happy about it. That’s what it’s all about. Congrats on the wedding. My husband went to bama and we are gearing up for tonight!

Seems like the waitlist is a simple yes/no. Getting really better with the why michigan essays and a third attempt would have been nice. Just kidding! All the best to everyone admitted.

Strictly based on historical yield. The colleges monitor every week and decide to dip into WL sooner or later. You can see it on the Virginia Tech Thread where they have already dipped into the WL.

That’s the key. Highly selective schools with high yield are unlikely to dip into the WL pool before mid-May.

Bought our y/n lotto tickets to Michigan and UCLA yesterday, narrowing our May 1 choice by end of April.

Our decision is research opportunity dependent in mental health care field, so we will probably wait to the bitter end, trying to guess how the chaos in washington affects each school on our list.

Looks like universities are willing to trade off their DEI/1st Amendment principles for $s, so maybe it won’t be a difficult decision on the research opportunity side.

CS decisions come 7-10 days later, at least for CoE last year.

Interesting comments and we aren’t going political on here but…

A friend at Michigan is a second year PhD and was just guaranteed her PhD money.

DEI is changing their name and mission but will still help the students it was geared to help.

Lot’s of moving parts nationally at most universities. Gotta give them some time to figure their next steps. I won’t guarantee anything but Michigan in the end historically, has seemed to make the right decision.

Good luck.

There is also a really good waitlist blog on Georgia Tech site but it has different dates etc so I didn’t want to confuse anyone.

So my advice once again is to move on. If you want to stay on the waitlist then do so but if you commit somewhere the proper thing to do is withdrawal. But… After May 1st the schools will refresh their lists anyway.

Schools build a class. Once they see where they are they need to see what the “institution” needs. Not what “you” want .

They might need more Chem majors or Tuba player’s or what not to fill “their” schools properly. So the kid that sits next to you in class with a lower GPA and scores might be the next student that “they” need. How dare they :joy:.

But the chances to get off the wait list are very low. It’s been posted many times and you can look that up. But if you enjoy playing the lottery…

What I tell people is to move on. If for some reason in Mid to late June and I have heard of people accepting in August… You get an email that you are off the wait list then you will have a decision to make. If it’s the right thing to do for your family than that is great. You will most likely lose your other deposits you made.

But what can you do now? This is up for debate. Some high schools counslers have a working (using this term loosely) relationship per se with some AOs at different schools. Ask your high school what they can do. Never hurts to ask or make them aware of what you really do want to do. Remember when you were supposed to meet with your counslers in Junior year? This is sorta why.

I don’t like to live with regrets for not trying.

So you all will say you can transfer in. Sure. You can try. But… Michigan is very very picky about what classes transfer in. Very picky especially for Math and science. Very, very picky. There is an office to see which clsses do so. Transferring Credit | U-M LSA Newnan Advising Center.

I did mention how picky they are right? My son was a student there and just taking a math and science class in the summer since it’s much cheaper at a local community College. One college they wanted to see the final test and all the syllabuses and the other class they needed to reach out to the professor.

I would just be happy and thankful where you ended up landing and just do great work there. I think it’s important to become part of the active college community scene . Internships and jobs love students that are active. Really doesn’t matter what. Just do what you love to do and “Bet on yourself” and take chances. Try different things. Explore.

Good luck to all.

In short, waitlist is just a lottery ticket…. We all know what that means.

Act accordingly.
