Son is an international student from Canada and has been accepted to to the University of Michigan, Univ of Illinois Chicago, Temple University, Lawrence Tech, Andrews University for architecture programs. His dream is to go to the u of Michigan but we would have to remortgage our house or take out a loan. He does not qualify for financial aid or any student loans as an international student. We have heard that if he went to the university of Michigan, his chances of finding a job are much better because it is harder for international students to secure jobs that pay well. He has to let u of m know of his decision by May 1st. If someone could respond as soon as possible, I would appreciate it. Thank you!
Why mortgage the house when he could go to McGill, Toronto or Waterloo? does he hate living in Canada that much?
He loves Canada. He is going to a local university in Michigan where we live. Son is on an F1 visa while his dad (H1) and I (H4) have visas. He applued to Univ of Waterloo but was denied. Even though he is a Canadian citizen, he has been in Michigan now for 4 yrs.
As a Canadian citizen he could go to McGill or U of T for $8000/year tuition.
He went to high school in Michigan for 4 years, so he should be eligible for in state tuition rate.

In that case, it is a good deal. The question is whether you can afford it. Equity loan is one way to borrow money. As a foreigner, you probably do not have much options. How much do you need to borrow for 4 years?
He didn’t attend high school or middle school in Michigan. He came to Michigan and was accepted to a local very small university in our town. We live in the upper peninsula of northern michigan in a very small town. He will be transferring to another university for the Fall.
We do own our house but are a little weary of taking out a mortgage on it.

How many years would he be going to UMich? Sounds like he already has some college credit.
5 years for a BS in Architecture
Sorry that I am so confused. He’s lived in Michigan for four years but didn’t attend HS or middle school there? How old is he?
How much would you be borrowing TOTAL for 5 years for this degree?
What if he doesn’t excel in architecture? There are a lot of unemployed architects…and ones that aren’t paid that much.
Just turned 24
Borrowing maybe around $80-90,000
Why on earth is he doing an additional 5 years for his BS if he already has some college credits? He really should just finish up his BS for CHEAP and then maybe do the M. Arch 3 year program at U of M (if he’s set on Michigan).
80-90k is not worth it.
We also have a daughter who will be graduating from college next year With a bachelor’s degree And will be persuing a master’s degree. By next yeayear, she will be a Green card holder unlike our son.
Better would be to go to school at a university in Canada at a much lower cost.
Maybe it’s too late to apply to Canadian schools for the upcoming enrollment. I have to admit, I’m not really sure that a UMich architecture degree is worth mortgaging a house though. I feel like the son really should have been able to transfer credits from his prior school to the new school though to help reduce the time and money he would need to spend at Michigan. Is that option completely off the table or is it just too soon to contemplate it?
Most deadlines for universities in Canada were in Nov-Dec 2014. He will have lots of credits that will transfer over. He will be calling UMich on Monday to inquire about the credits. He tried asking befire but Admissions said to wait for the package to come in the mail.
No college is worth $80-90K in debt…none!
