University of Michigan Deferral Thread EA 2019

@joej7237 haven’t heard that.

My counselor told me that the next batch of decisions won’t come out till March 1st. Has anyone else heard that?

Yeah I heard the same from my counselor and to back it up I have a friend who works at UMich that said the same

i’m expecting another wave tonight 8-|

@nat97xo‌ what makes you think that?

@96blue last year they released decisions every other Friday :slight_smile:

@nat97xo Today is Thursday?

@lcmcb1‌ they release around midnight EST

are you guys sure its today ?

@nat97xo Ah that makes sense. It doesn’t look like anybody has said they got a response today though.

How do you confirm that U of M received your updated grades from first semester?

@instate97 On Common App, it should be listed whether your counselor sent in a mid-year report which would include your first semester grades. You can find this under the my colleges section, and in the recommenders and FERPA section of UM, there should be a slot for mid year report in which, if your counselor has sent in a mid year report, the date when the report was submitted should be listed.

Anyone else hearing anything as to when the next wave will be released?

Thanks Drewp24 - D had best semester yet with all A’s in mostly AP classes - was EA deferred at U of M COE but has been accepted to Purdue and Colorado School of Mines (with CSOM providing some scholarship money to help with out of state costs). 31 ACT, 3.94 UW, 4.2W, top 10 in class of 230, 2 year captain, 2year MVP, and all-state cross country runner, 2 state championships with soccer team, environmental club, uses guitar and singing ability for various fundraisers

We’ll see what U of M thinks.

If your daughter is in state, how could they not let her in with those credentials? There is little difference between a 31 and a 33 ACT, so I don’t see how that could be an issue.

@instate97‌, we’re in a similar situation - deferred from COE with a 3.76 and 33 ACT; 7th semester was all A’s with mostly AP courses but they weren’t submitted until the day before the last round of decisions due to snow days so they likely weren’t considered. Accepted to Purdue but the OOS tuition is so much higher. Good luck to you and hopefully we’ll both get good news.

@onceuponamom 31 and 33 ACT would be around 25 percentile away for CoE (from 25% to 50%). It is quite significant. I know an in state student with ACT 33 got deferred from EA and still waiting. But for a girl applying to CoE, 31 in ACT should be fine from in state.

@onceuponamom - I am frankly assuming she will get accepted eventually, but you never know. If she does not, I don’t believe the “holistic” review at all. If she gets accepted, I’ll make her take at least a week to decide between CSOM and U of M - has to get over the bitterness of deferral first. CSOM is a great school in a great location, but it is small and is a different environment than U of M or Purdue.

@BSM1987 - I agree Purdue OOS is too expensive and the President Scholarships just went out last Friday as far as I know, so she did not receive one of those. She will likely win a local scholarship, but that will be no more than 1-2K per year. Her Mom and I both went to Purdue, so we are somewhat disappointed. Would have been fun to visit!

@billcsho‌ - I think she received money from CSOM largely due to being a female engineer - that school is 75/25 M/F.

Good luck to all of you!

@instate97 My D won the President Scholarship at Purdue last year too. Then they add another $10k scholarship per year. But even with $20k per year, it is still more expensive than in state public without aid although really close.

The State of Michigan is constantly complaining about a, “brain drain.” Our best public university needs to try to keep top students INSTATE.
