University of Michigan - Deferral Thread

Yes, it is just not fair to the kids to be tortured as they seem to be.

How exactly is that supposed to work?

They currently give everyone a date - April 15. They release in batches prior to this date which allows them to tailor their subsequent acceptances for the proper mix of students. If they did them all on a given date, they would have little control of this as they would not know who will commit.

I am not just referring about Michigan. I know UMichigan sends in batches. But kids apply to different universities. If they get all responses same day. At least they will be happy with list of college’s they get in. All universities should have 2 same date’s. One for early and one for regular.
I know it is very difficult for university where there are 8000 kids. But it would be easy for the universities where there are 1500 to 2000 kids in undergraduate.
Universities where there are more students can come up with major release with the other universities.

There are so many factors that go into how a college manages its admissions and enrollment. Having one or two days to release all decisions is completely unrealistic. Moreover, there is certainly something worth learning from the experience of waiting, and yes, being disappointed. Why is it so necessary to ensure the happiness of everyone? These young adults are in for a rude awakening if they think that everything should be done to ensure their happiness.

None of these universities are misleading anyone. When you applied to Michigan, you knew the decisions would be made on a continuous basis, just as they are with many other schools. I don’t see the point in getting angry.

The deposit is not required until May 1st so what additional information willl they have between now and then as far as who is coming and who is wating to hear from other schools such as the Ivy’s ?

I am Parent.I am not angry. I totally agree with you, kids will get the experience by waiting. I am just wondering if we can improve the process. There is the way we can improve the process. This is possible if all universities come together and agree on some procedure…

Pretty sure next friday is the final day for admissions! Admissions counselor wrote back saying decision will be out by april 1st. Last year the final decision was friday March 29th. Very confident it’ll be next friday March 28th. Good luck all!

@YBhope Could you please show us a picture of that email? Apart from that, it makes sense that they didn’t release it since they are on spring break currently and return monday.

“The deposit is not required until May 1st so what additional information willl they have between now and then as far as who is coming and who is wating to hear from other schools such as the Ivy’s ?”

They are getting many commitments every day as well as accepted students that withdraw their application when they are accepted to a higher choice. This data is factored in to who is accepted in the next batch. There is no reason whatsoever form them to change a process that is successful when there are many more applicants than they can accept.

The big picture is that they did give everyone a specific date - April 15. My daughter is also deferred and waiting. She has minimal anxiety as I have repeatedly drilled into her head that she probably won’t hear back until mid April.

My take is that, if you haven’t been accepted by now, you probably aren’t a 34 ACT / 3.98 GPA student that would be a “slam dunk” if they rushed through the application process. It is probably in your favor that they are taking so long to go over the applicants rather than just taking those with the highest stats.

another week, everyone. another glorious week that should not be wasted on anxiety, but instead wasted on laughs and tears and loving and living. all time spent is wasted, but how you waste it is what’s important. waste this next week in ease and next friday will roll around before you know it. best of luck to all of you troopers who have held strong for so long, i’m on that same boat. keep your head up high

Well said. Good vibes to everyone :v: One more week is a hell of a lot better than three!

waitlisted for ucla… i rly needa get into michigan!!!

Hey…look at the bright side…Community College isn’t so bad. We can do 2 years standing on our heads!

Good Morning UM wannabes! The good news…UM is having a huge open house on April 12!!! The potentially bad news…we may not care by that point!

Ok…seriously…I have a feeling…good, bad or ugly…this is the week we get the word. Let’s stay positive and hope for the best.

@jcooch I actually trust your instincts too… so let’s brace ourselves!
