University of Michigan - Deferral Thread

@Michigan95 what makes you think that? Look, I don’t want to get in a fight over the internet over this, but please realize that I’m just posting my stats. My essay was about me finding modesty and humility in Taekwondo and applying that lifestyle to the rest of my life. If I came across as pretentious, I am sorry. I am just a little surprised that I wasn’t admitted when I had teachers and counselors say to me that I would be admitted.

@cdrake3… Have not got admitted yet…or flat out rejected? Outwardly you seem to shine as a no-brainier selection! Rhyme and reason are in the wind…I am screwed!

I said it before…I will say it again…

The Waaaaaaiting…is the hardest part…

@JCooch I was deferred. I haven’t received a letter accepting me nor rejecting me. My flaws are as followed: 1. I have only community college computer science courses listed (I screwed up in my High School course selection in that my AP European History Class was concurrent with the AP Computer Science course offered at my school, so I couldn’t take AP Comp Sci) 2. I have a dip in my 2nd semester Junior Year grades because I was finishing my Internal Assessments for my IB diploma, preparing for the ACT, and writing the rough drafts and finishing data for my research project) and 3. I haven’t been the most strategic in my LORs (I had my math HS teacher, but I didn’t include my computer science teacher from the community college).

When I told my college counselor at my school about my deferral, she was surprised and said that U Mich defers over-qualified students to appear more selective and to manage financial aid. Remember that only the initial application reading is “need-blind” at U Michigan. This means that if you get deferred, they can access your financial records in addition to your application during the second screening and use your application as a way to pay for regular and early admitted students who need financial aid (this is why, at any university, the majority of the deferred students who get in during regular admission either didn’t select financial aid needed or that their financial need is very low (like, sub $1000).

Don’t worry. As long as you’re in state or OOS w/o a lot of financial support you should be fine. U Mich is a great university, and I think you’ll do fine.

I am soooooooooo screwed.

FOH that wasn’t even pretentious. And to be fair I’ve seen some REALLY pretentious stats posted in Chance Me threads.

This is the week it all happens…good or bad…this is it. Word!

question… are we sure that this is it?

No we aren’t, I’m sure that plenty of people will hear back after they process the number of kids that choose ivies etc over Michigan on Thursday. I would expect most of us to know by the following week, with the likelihood of a fair number finding out this week.

@rtv2014 i got rejected from bu too!! what were your sat scores?

I am sticking with my gut. This is the week. To hell with the Ivy League!

@jcooch I’m gonna stick with you too.

Essays and Recs were amazing

No idea why I wasn’t admitted

=================================================================================

You may or may not end up being admitted. There will be many people with stats similar to yours that don’t get admitted (and many with worse stats that do). They are looking for a diverse mix of people so it’s possible that other similar applicants were a better fit. It’s also possible that your essays and rec’s were not amazing to the particular people that read your application.

I’m guessing that you also applied to Stanford so maybe the admissions people assume that UofM is your backup.

Let me ask a question…indulge me if you will. If any of you have ever watched any of the Schmacked movie series on Universities you will understand. Of particular interest is The University of Michigan Schmacked Movie.
How the hell is it possible that all of the best qualified students that Mich accepts can be raging as hard as the rangers depicted? No way every student is a star student maintaining that lifestyle! How the hell did they get in being world class rangers?

<a href=“- YouTube”>- YouTube;

@jcooch I TOTALLY FEEL WHAT YOU’RE SAYING, i was thinking the same damn thing.

Work hard play hard

@cabooser…no way! They rage like they are going to the chair in the morning! No way!

BTW…Cabooser? Seriously?

thats because some of those students were accepted in years when it was a lot easier to get into michigan -__-

Do I sense some jealousy? Just because it’s a good school doesn’t mean people can’t have a good time. If you’re really all about academics, then how come you aren’t as competitive as these “ragers”?. Not to sound like a jerk or anything. Also, there are some pretty sick parties at MIT if you’ve ever been to them.

@michael543212345 Nah…you don’t sound like a jerk…not really sure what you sound like or your point or what the jealousy thing has to do with anything…no offense taken regardless. Maybe I am on deferral because I DO rage like those depicted…maybe I SHOULD have been more about the academics…who is to say? ;)
