University of Michigan - Deferral Thread

@JCooch were you rejected or wait listed? I was wait listed, presumably because legacy. But that doesn’t do anything for me. With 15,000 accepted and 6,500 attending, I don’t think 7,501 kids (not including others wait listed) will decline admission.

^^True, it’s absolutely fine to put your name on the waitlist, but do accept an offer from another school by May 1. Historically UofM has waitlisted many, many more kids than ever get off the waitlist. If UofM gets the number of acceptances they plan for, no one will come off the waitlist. The very worse situation is they actually do take a few off the waitlist and those persons forfeit a deposit elsewhere,

@Michigan95…flat out rejected my friend…kicked to the curb…rear view mirror material.

@JCooch where are you off to then, what’s in mind?

i really miss waiting for the michigan response then sitting here depressed about the rejection… damn

Rejected…I’m actually so disappointed. I knew my scores weren’t particularly outstanding (struggled with social anxiety/depression during my sophomore and junior year which took a toll on my grades and limited the number of extracurriculars I did) but I am a Michigan resident and go to a prestigious private prep school so I thought I had a chance. I’ve already been accepted into UM-Dearborn so I will probably go there for freshman year and try and transfer to Ann Arbor afterwards.

Best of luck to all those who got rejected and now have to resort to other schools; hopefully you will find a school worthy of your caliber. And a big congratulations to all those who got accepted! I wish everyone the best.

^^ Sorry to hear the news. Did you apply to MSU and/or any other liberal arts school (KZoo) etc?

Good luck & all the best to all.

I have moved on but have a small glimmer of hope. Did anyone hear back that was wait listed?? What do you think the chances are?? Just wondering.

The chances of getting off the wait list are next to zero. It is massive and they admit very few people. A couple of years ago they offered the wait list to 14,000+ students and admitted 42 of them.

Anyone heard from the waitlist? Good luck to those who are waiting

Hey, I got deferred as well. Here are my stats-

I don’t know what’s wrong with my app…??? Help

36 ACT
2350 SAT
National merit semifinalist
4th in class
Deferred

I doubt there’s anything wrong with your application. You’ll get in regular, I’m sure.

Also this is last year’s thread. Here is this year’s: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-michigan-ann-arbor/1721068-university-of-michigan-deferral-thread-ea-2019.html

Deferred
Does it hurt/help my chances if I am an international student and someone from my high school has already been accepted into UMich EA?

@HalfAzn‌ what does your deferral letter say? Mine says
“Thank you for your application to the University of Michigan College of Engineering for Fall 2015. We are pleased that you have applied and are impressed with your achievements. However, our high application volume, coupled with the very strong credentials of our applicants in recent years, has contributed to an increasingly competitive admissions process. As a result, we are writing to inform you that your application is currently being deferred for further review.”

Does yours say the same thing?

International Applicant: Indian Immigrant

Deferred.

Applied for: Computer Science

SAT Score: 2330 (800 M, 800 W, 730 CR)

SAT II Score: 2380 (800 Math, 800 Chem, 780 Phy)

Grades: All A+ from grade 9-11. Mid-Sem grades in 12th also all A+. (About 2% drop in marks from grade 11th to 12th, still, overall grades are A+)

Predicted Grades for grade 12: Very very high (Almost 100)

Class Rank: NA. But my teacher told she has mentioned that I am in the top 1% in my school.

Recomm: Computer Teacher’s LOR should be excellent. Counsellor’s would be very good.

Essays: I think my CommonApp Essay was the Achilles Heel. Supplemental essays were 7.5/10

ECs: All 10 sections of CommonApp are stuffed. National and International Level wins (since my country is quite small, national wins won’t matter much).

Leadership: President Student Council in my school.

I was deferred CoE, 1510/2310 sat, ~3.93 gpa, good leadership and ecs, really good recs, etc etc
